maybe you wait to get Procede and test . If my cable connects with xp without issue its Windows 7 that sucks. i installed both drivers for procede and BT cable before , W7 cant even find them. I can probably get it to work but i dont care right now i was curious to see why so many people had issues and well Windows again shows what a crappy OS is.

Hi guys,
For those who are having problems with sustaining comms with your serial/usb converter, read this:

Quote:
Why most low-cost USB to Serial RS232 (and RS485/RS422) adapters does NOT work with Windows 7.
Many USB to Serial adapters does not work with Windows 7 because these adapters are made with a low-cost processor chip meeting only a minimum of the industry standard requirements. The physical quality of the chip is usually fine however the drivers for the chip are very often poorly written programs which makes the adapter unstable and unreliable and not fully compatible with Windows 7 and other current operating systems. Because of this you will in many cases be unable to make a low-cost adapter work with Windows 7 and Vista and you can expect some of the following typical errors:

- Computer freeze
- Invalid debug DLL
- Computer crashing - Driver problems
- Unable to connect to your device
- Unable to establish a COM port
Other problems you might experience with a low-cost adapter.
Most low-cost USB to Serial adapters (also called USB to RS232 adapters or converters) are not "true serial", they handle only approximately 60% of the 'common' RS232 uses/devices, which means that they will only work with slightly more the half of all commonly used serial devices.

The technical explanation.
A USB adapter cannot be 100% transparent to your device because of latencies/data delays and how the data is transmitted, so among other things successful communication is a matter of timing.
Many programs and devices were written and constructed for a serial port having a 16-character FIFO - or possibly for the original serial port that didn't have any FIFO at all. Several USB adapters have hundreds of bytes of FIFO, so it matters a lot if the data is sent using bulk transfers, and the device using control transfer. This scenario is giving many low-cost adapters bad timing issues with many programs and devices, which in general means that it will work properly with either your computer or the device you connect to the adapter.

We do sell a low-cost adapter for customers who need to use it with Windows 98, 2000 and XP however for Windows 7 and Vista we highly recommend our USB to RS232 Vista/7 optimized adapter.

What is limited compatibility?
Since most low-cost USB to Serial adapters are using a low-cost processor chip, these has only limited compatibility with Windows Vista and Windows 7. Limited compatibility means that the adapter/drivers might or might not work with your Vista/7 computer, it all depends on your computer's particular hardware, installed Windows components and service packs, conflicting drivers or other pheriphial devices, and even your processors bios version.

Also, we are going to start stocking this unit: http://www.usconverters.com/index.ph...roducts_id=290

Tested on many laptops running Vista and Windows 7. Currently running it on my Macbook Air running Windows 7 via Parallels.
