i think my engine is knocking....

2007 328xi bought it in march this year.

last week i ran something over on the highway, not sure what it was but it broke my fog light and cracked/tore up my bumper.

not a big deal, so i thought, accidents happen. well good news is that my car is already fixed and looks perfect. bad news, when i start it, i hear a ticking/knocking noise.

i didn't hear this noise before i ran this mystery item over. one of my mechanic friends tells me that it sounds like my engine is knocking or a lifter is damaged. he thinks that the knocking is not related to the thing i ran over. i think it is related, but i don't know too much about engines.

i already made an appointment with my dealer for jan 2nd and i don't plan on driving the car until i take it to the dealer, but what do you guys think?

The noise is not related to the accident, and i think its normal and ur engine is perfectly fine. Just search the forum (ticking noise, engine noise) and u will find punch of them. Thats good u took an appointment with ur dearler just to make sure, but they will tell u that everybody have the same problem. In fact i have that noise too.

If the engine is knocking, it definatley was not caused by whatever you ran over.

Are you hearing a knock or a metallic tick... sounds like it may be a coincidence, but you may have a bad lifter or some air in the lifter hydraulic system. They may attempt a bleed procedure for this which involves warming the engine up and holding it at 3500rpm for a few minutes.

IF they do this and the problem doesn't go away, they may elect to change the cylinder head.

Don't worry, it will all be under warantee if this is the case.

You must put premium because of high compression ratio.

i always use premium gas.

i will admit...i haven't driven the car for longer than 30 minutes in the past 3 weeks. not sure if that matters.

also, if there was damage or a problem, shouldn't i see a code? in my navi display, under system info all services have a green OK next to them.

i have 11,900 on the engine and i haven't changed the oil yet. i am going to bring this up at the dealer when i arrive.

knocking and pinging is usually caused by detonation due to lack of octane in the fuel. The fuel is not burning evenly in the chamber. Valves are hitting the heads.

but if you using premium? I don't know? what brand are you using?

according to BMW you should be fine. I change my oil every 5000 miles though. What does your service indicator say?

Uh, I wouldn't go as far as 10-15k miles to change your oil...

I tried it once, but that's cause my car burns oil like it's nobody's business.

It was kind of thick and dark.

I think I do it every 5-7k miles now, and I try to change my filter half way in between changes.

the oil indicator says to get it changed at 10k miles

also, if i want the oil changed every 5k, does the dealer still do it for free? or do they only do if for free every x amount of miles?

basically you get it free at your first full service which is usually around 14-18k depending on how you drive. you can also get a free oil change at your one year mark...thats assuming your dealership got the memo and will give u a free oil change at the one year mark. if you get a oilchange at the dealer and its neither the year mark or full service, you'll be charged about 130 bucks. most people on the boards and bmw mechanics will recommend you do it yourself.

because they only pay for the scheduled oil services... that is to say, when your computer tells you to get an oil change. They also pay for one per year I believe if you do not meet the mileage requirement.

The reason many do it by themselves, me included, is that they don't trust the BMW scheduled service intervals (because they are so long) to keep the engine at peak health for its life. I change my oil by myself every 5000 miles (8,000 km) and I save like 30-45 bucks per oil change (depending on if I get oil on sale or not) versus paying the dealer and I don't have to deal with the hassle of the dealer telling me that I don't need an oil change, etc.
