Just bought a 2011 328xi, noticed the same thing about the tips when I detailed it myself. Great idea about the steel wool. Thanks.

I went crazy with my chrome tips trying to keep them clean. Now that I have the burnt tips, my stress level on that has dropped a lot...just an idea if you like them...

Detailing cars is so much work. I went through my phase of buying a buffer/pads/etc to get the swirls out and do everything myself. After doing a couple rounds, I gave up. I...like you...have a big respect for people who do that for a living. SO much work and requires serious know how and experience.

BTW, chemical guys do make good shit. I still have the poor boys car wash and that stuff is great. Got it from Greg....as well as everything else..

Ill show you my tip

I use Mother's small powerball and some metal polish.
Gets the job done in less than a min per tip. Long lasting protection/water beading too

If your in the LA Area I recommend going to the Chemical Guys shop its in Inglewood. It's awesome, dont bring any credit card just the cash u want to limit your self to spending. When your in there you realize u need EVERYTHING!
