like I said.... This is because the dyno runs are done in 4th gear! 4th gear at 7000rpm is ~143 mph!!! non-sport only goes to 130mph. its speed related, NOT rpm... if the dyno was done in 3rd, they would both go all the way to 7000 |

See thats the thing. In all the reviews they state that the sport package includes a speedometer that goes up to 160(see edmunds article). Why would they say that if both the base model and sport option come with it?

I think I remember reading a manual that agreed with this.....so says my mechanic, but as good as he is and as long as he has been with BMW, he may be completely wrong.

Exactly, even though right at redline there is less power when you drop into the next gear you have more power so it's overall better/faster to always shift at the redline.

Okay, I have non-ZSP 335i Sedan and I just checked and it definitely has a top reading of 160mph/260kph. I need to get that speed limiter removed

This makes absolutely no sense. If your redline is at 7k but your car stops making power around 6500 then youre just wasting those 500rpm doing nothing. That 500rpm difference isnt enough to keep you out of the powerband when running that hard. The 335 torque comes on at 1400rpm and stays there along the whole way. The HP maybe comes on strong around 2500rpm. If you shift at 6500rpm youre still probably going to be around 3k rpm. Theres no need to try to be above that by shifting at redline the previous gear.

I calculated the optimal shift points based on the power curves from the 335 with the PROcede and a manual transmission. The optimal shift point is around 6700 RPMs in the first three gears. So, if you shift when you see 6500, you should be dead on. Maximizing the Area Under the Horsepower Curve: Finding Best Shift Placement Points For Ratio 4.05 to 2.40: # Found optimum shift RPM at 6795, which achieves maximum area under horsepower curve, and lowers the RPM to 4015 after shift Finding Best Shift Placement Points For Ratio 2.40 to 1.58: # Found optimum shift RPM at 6793, which achieves maximum area under horsepower curve, and lowers the RPM to 4485 after shift Finding Best Shift Placement Points For Ratio 1.58 to 1.19: # Found optimum shift RPM at 6795, which achieves maximum area under horsepower curve, and lowers the RPM to 5120 after shift |

How the hell do u drive 120+ mph and still get pulled over? I was doing 120 once and saw a trooper pulling onto the freeway. I gunned it on him and he never saw me again.

Some states (or counties) have pursuit rules that prevent them from chasing you. Yes, that means *real* criminals can run and get away because the police has to let them.

That doesn't mean a helicopter can't follow them though, and radio to PD their location when they stop..
