If you have the factory oil cooler, there is a 2nd gasket I recommend replacing as well while you have it all apart. Here is a picture of mine when I replaced it recently. As you can see it was starting to deteriorate just like the other gasket that connects the oil filter housing to the block.

Yep...mine was actually leaking from this gasket. The oil filter housing gasket was fine but I replaced it anyway.

just wanted to give you all an update I did my oil filter housing gasket this weekend and everything went well wanted to say thanks to jdbretz for his help with this project. It was a long process and I messed up the head on one of the bolts my advice is to get torx sockets and def a racheting wrench for the bolt underneath the housing. I had to tie some the bolts with fishing line (powerpro) just incase they feel down. Once they fall its a super PITA to retrieve them. Make sure you bleed the water pump b4 you start the car to get all the air out.

Don't have too went to my local ACE hardware and found the same bolt just with a different head. It worked like a charm.

Just wondering how long did it take you to do it? Any advice or warning you recommend specially when taking out the manifold?

it took me all of a saturday to fix both seals since I wasnt really sure and taking my time, just follow all the directions under this post. Its not hard at all just have to take your time and a extra set of hands is always good. Can't really break anything when taking off the manifold....got both of my seals from the dealer they have the part #'s...can't remember the part #'s

Did you need to drain the oil to do this?

Part numbers are
11427525335 Oil Cooler Gasket
11427537293 Oil Filter Housing Gasket

no need to drain oil but you will loose some coolant so some BMW coolant or DI water is good to have on hand

A others have said not a bad idea to clean intake valves since you are removing the intake manifold....but there is yet another part you should probably replace along the OFH and Heat Exchanger gaskets, there's a coolant line (from thermostat housing to OFH) that will need to be removed to get to the bottom bolt on the OFH....the flange has two bolts and an o-ring..that o-ring should be replaced, $2 dollar part...at 69k mine looks pretty beat up....

11537545278 is the part number.....no lubbricant needed to my knowledge, and have some coolant and distilled water handy (mix 50/50), I lost about a quart and a half when I disconnected the coolant line......
