FYI,

I think the Oil Filter part number for 2008 E9x is 11-42-7-566-327,

someone needs to confirm what other years this is also true for, the other part number in the pictures is the correct one for the 2006 330i

Hope this helps cause I tried searching everywhere for definitive answer.

Just changed my oil (myself) for the first time yesterday. Same thing happened to me...didn't see the drips start until I got back from a test drive. Checked the drain bolt - it was tight and not leaking. The front was on ramps when I changed the oil and I have the oil pan configuration with the drain bolt head pointing down.

Is there a trick to getting the oil to drain straight down and through the trap door opening???

Strange. I did mine for the first time last week and had no such problems.

Here is how I did mine.
It got a little messy when I was trying to remove the filter element from the housing. Other than that, no mess.

yo are you like a stunt man? that isn't really the safest way to hold your car up. go purchase some jack stands and save your face from reconstructive surgery

Not sure what happened. I was thinking while I was doing it that this was one of the easiest oil changes I've done (especially with the filter right there on top) until I spotted the oil drip. Scared the hell out of me at first, I thought I screwed up the drain plug!

I think next time I'm going to tape up a paper barrier around the drain hole and see if that works...unless someone else has a better idea.

I know I shouldn't have done it that way.
I'm getting stands for next time.
Ramps don't work with the Hartge lip I have.

I am going to change my oil this weekend but which way should i turn the oil filter in order to remove it?

counter clockwise.

You will need the strap wrench. Else, it will be hard to remove/reinstall the cap.

You will need a torque wrench.

You could also just get it tight until you think its tight enough.

i would also be weary about adding all 7 quarts in. I put about 6 and change in there, which indicated a max oil level. you have to account for the fact you never really get 100% of the oil out of the engine unless you're using a pump. in addition, rhino ramps also make it more difficult to get all the old oil out.

last time i got an oil change it was at my local BMW dealership and they left my oil filter so tight, that I have not been able to remove it with my strap wrench. I have removed it before with a strap wrench so I was wondering if any of you guys have any suggestion on how to remove this stubborn oil filter?

I just DIY on my LCI E90 (Very nice write-up by the way )
I put all 7 qts of oil but wasn't enough...so I added 1/2 more.

Just did my first DIY. I used the central jack point and then lowered it onto jack stands. I used a thick piece of cardboard folded in half to act as a pad between the jackhead and the center jack point. I had to pull the front wheels onto some 2x4's first in order for the floor jack to fit underneath! I used wood blocks cut to fit into the jackstand pads and seem to have no damage on those. Using a jack point so far in front of the jackstand pads didn't allow me to extend my jackstands very far, so there was little room under the car. After I lowered the car onto the jackstands, I put the 2x4's on edge under the tires for an extra margin of safety.

Drain plug was very tight, and I found TWO copper washers in the oil pan. The oil shot WAY out to the passenger side, but the cardboard I laid down caught most of it. Next time, I'll start by putting the drain pan by the tire instead of under the drain plug! Very little oil seemed to have gotten under the belly pan. I have a rubber strap wrench, but the thin, hard oil filter cap didn't have enough traction against the rubber to come loose. I torqued the drain plug to 25 NM, which is about 18 ft lbs, and refilled with Mobil 1 0W-40.

Without changing the filter, 6 qts of oil brought the gague about 2/3 of the way to "max".

out of curiosity would doing your own oil changes in between the free ones, effect the warranty or cpo warranty. I wouldn't think it would but I am not sure how picky BMW is.

Only if they can prove the failure is due to doing something stupid related to the oil change, like not tightening the drain plug, using wrong oil, etc.

cool, i don't think driving 5 hrs to a bmw dealer is cost effective just to do an oil change, i have done plenty myself

My wife and I are new to the 330i world and love it. I am also a Corvette guy, and use this trick to get the Vette (and soon our 330i) up on the ramps. Take 2 ea. 24" to 36" long 2X12 boards and cut a a miter on one end (to allow you to smoothly drive onto the 2 X 12. Place the boards just in front of your ramps. The 2" (actually 1.5") height of the 2X12, is enough to clear the lower air dam and allows you drive cleanly onto the ramps. Zuti
