Fortunately they didn't quote the parts of the article which were wrong (see my article reviewing the NY Times review to find out what those were )

Does anyone have comparison specs on the idrive units on the '08s and the '09s. I'm on the fence about buying a used 08 or new 09, and one of the biggest things keeping me from buying the used car is the older idrive.

Anyone have detailed pics of the older unit and such? Thanks

If you even have the slightest interest in iDrive (i.e. if you will ever use it), you should get a 2009.

You can't do this - at least not from an Apple iPod.

But the, who would ever expect a NYT article to be even remotely accurate....

we'll see if there will be the ripping functionality of songs right inside the iDrive system. I can foresee a lot of legal issues with having this feature available.

It's there. You can copy unprotected compressed music files from USB devices (e.g. MP3, MP4/ACC, and WMA). And you can even rip from Audio CD discs right from the disc slot in the dash. The iDrive even has a Gracenote database on the hard drive so that it can assign the album title, artist, track name, etc as it's ripping from the CD!

There is a feature to backup from the iDrive's hard drive to a USB device, but it's a proprietary and DRM'd format - no way to read the file.....

Is there a way to update that? How would it get info on new CDs that come out in the future? Satellite update? Just curious

why?

it's your car.you can burn cd's legally for personal use.. your not making any money..there is no infringement on transferring data from one computer to another pending there is no sale and you own both.. if you own the music b/c you bought it or dled a show for free like most bands allow where is the problem? your not selling it to your bmw or someone.. your transferring your own music to your vehicle..many cars and trucks have 40gig hard drives for this reason alone.. Cadillac has it i think most all dodge cars and trucks have it as an option as well..there is not going to be a legal issue..

the only issue with idrive and legal issues is trying to get the cell phone carriers to concur with bmw's usage of internet access through their network which bmw is reportedly working on.

The gracenote database will be updated via BMW dealers with a special CD. You can check which version you have installed by calling up the service menu and selecting gracenote. The version number will be listed.

Ahh, very cool. Thank you. Hope there is no fee involved, as I suspect there is.

This capability is very cool.

HOWEVER, note that the car will only rip music into 128kbps WMA format. Not that I have any issue with WMA, but that bitrate is very low and will affect sound quality.

If you want to have reasonable sound quality, you'll have to rip on a desktop computer at a higher bitrate, then copy the file to the car's hard drive via USB device.

This approach then makes the Gracenote on the car's hard drive meaningless, except for the few instances you might play an Audio CD directly from the car's optical drive.

Given the car's limitation in ripping, I'd rather have the space used by Gracenote freed up and used for additional music storage....

How do you call up the service menu, not found that option yet?!

Is cool.

Only issue really is that you have no control over the encoding. It'll rip at 128kbps WMA, and that's all. I have nothing against WMA - I just want to be able to use a much higher bitrate, preferably lossless....

Has anybody ever had their Gracenote database updated? If so, how?
