Interesting Article on Ford Ecoboost 3.5 Turbos

http://mrtruck.net/ecoboost.htm

Found the comments on durability testing, reverse siphoning cooling, and 'no special oil' interesting. I hope/believe the N54/MHI turbo setup is at least as good.

The test ran EcoBoost at maximum boost flat out for a 10-minute period. Then the engine and all cooling were abruptly shut down and the turbo was left to “bake” after this high-speed operation. If that sounds severe, imagine repeating this cycle 1,500 times without an oil change. That’s what EcoBoost’s turbos endured.

After 1,500 cycles, the turbos were cut open for detailed technical examination. The turbos passed the severe test with flying colors.

“We’ve attained things here the customer would never be able to do in their vehicle,” Plagens said. “Ten minutes of peak power (355 hp, 350 foot-pounds of torque) is something that’s probably only achievable in a vehicle for fractions of a minute, 10 seconds maybe in the extreme. We run it for 10 minutes many, many times over, and that’s far, far more harsh and severe than a vehicle test would be.”

Memo to Ford:

1. Put that engine in a sub-3500# sporty looking & driving RWD or AWD car

2. See #1

Until then, N54 FTW !!!

That thing needs to go in the Focus...or whatever they're calling it these days.

Passive siphoning occurs in any water cooled turbo. There hasn't been a non-water cooled turbo on a factory turbo car in nearly two decades. The N54 goes one step further and actually runs the electric waterpump at a reduced amount for a few minutes after you turn on the engine. This is actively, rather than passively, circulating coolant through the turbo bearing structures.

Dump the old 4.6 liter V8
Dump the old 4.0 V6

Put the 3.5 liter V6 as the base engine (I think they have a non turbo charged version of this engine no?)

Make the EcoBoost 3.5 the GT

or then make a larger better V8 with at least 420 hp for the top level "normal" mustang to compete with the Camaro SS in the power department.

That EcoBoost engine seems sweet, and will be amazing if it's as strong as they say and once tuned to make 450 hp.

This engine would also be a monster in a AWD Fusion

Their new base V6 in the Mustang is a NA version of the 3.5 displacing 3.7L. It makes around 280 hp. There is a new V8 option for next year, its called the "Coyote" V8. 5L, 32v and makes 400 hp. There doesn't appear to be an Ecotech V6 option in the mustang for at least a while.

I knew my B5 S4 did this...didn't realize our cars do this too

I remember putting a lower temp Coolant sensor so the pump would run more at lower temps than stock.

Now that the 3.5 normally aspirated engine is available in the Fusion with FWD and AWD, this might not be that far off. I'm sure someone is already thinking about putting the Taurus SHO TT engine in the Fusion.

That's interesting. Pretty much what I thought would happen but didn't think they'd put the 3.7 in the Mustang, but the cheaper 3.5 instead. Plus wasn't the 3.7 used in the Lincoln's and the 3.5 in the Ford's?

I had heard a couple years ago that Ford was working on another 5.0 V8, but haven't heard of it for awhile so I thought they dropped it.

I kinda figured the EcoBoost in the Mustang would be a pipe dream right now, simply because a lot more people would get that version than the V8 version.
The 3.5 EcoBoost makes 365 hp and the V8 400, but the V6 is probably lighter, gets 2-3 mpg better gas mileage, will be a bit cheaper to insure and with even a mild tune will waste the V8 in acceleration too.

Ford really needed 420 hp out of the new V8 though to be in line with the Camaro SS

Oh well. Maybe somebody will do an engine swap and put the EcoBoost in the Mustang.
That would be sweet.

sounds great, put that in the right car and they will sell a lot of them......but they probably won't let that happen here in the US for some stupid reason.
