Yes, there is a DIY for it. The level of difficulty depends on your level of skill in repairing cars, your compliment of tools, and a proper facility to perform the work. If you've have replaced a water pump on another car, or done brake work successfully, then the job is not that difficult.
Thanks. Do you have the link for DIY? Can't seem to find it...

Hi guys,

I'm not a regular user, but I wonder if someone could help. I've had exactly the same issue as this with my e92. It's done 150k now and never had the water pump changed so when I had the overheating warning lights exactly as explained in this thread the other day I assumed this was the problem!

However, when rac man he came did a diagnostics and said that some valve on my exhaust is blocked. We towed it to my local non dealership garage and I explained what was said and what I thought the problem might be (water pump). Upon removing the water pump they said it looked fine but that the EGR valve cooler had broken and needed replacing, but that might not solve the problem.

I've looked through lots of threads but can't find anything about an EGR cooler causing these problems (engine overheating, cutting out). Apparently you have to remove the water pump to replace the EGR cooler anyway so I've told him to put in a new water pump and thermostat anyway.

The EGR cooler is a really expensive part (circa £500). Could this have caused the symptoms, or is this a seperate coincidental issue (i don't want to be ripped off). Am I right in replacing the water pump anyway? If this doesn't solve the problem, what should I do next?

Many thanks for anyone's help.

Kindest regards,

James

No metal impellers on E90/E92 water pumps, only E46 I believe. It's dumb as hell that a part made out of plastic will have hot coolant running through it 24/7. I'm thinking this will have to be a maintenance item around every 80,000 miles or so. The older 335i's did have more problems with the pump and overheating issues in general, plus when the pumps die, they usually give no warning at all.

The impeller does not fail. The electrionics fail. Or on N54s the plastic impeller housing can crack.
