My friend mentioned this to me at the weekend. Something I hadn't thought of before and i'm interested to know your opinions???

He said to me that tyres have to be stored in a certian way otherwise their life expectancy can deteriorate quite drastically. So i did a quick google search and this was one of many pages.

I have to say I stored my last year in the shed. Used some spare thick carpet underlay under and between each wheel with one on top the other. After whole summer they did not even loose an ounce of air pressure. Only moved them into the garage in october after some kuts went around the area trashing peoples sheds to nick things. Total cost £0 and no problems

Mine are in the shed, stored flat with pieces of wood in between to stop them rubbing. Having looked at that Conti link though, I may rotate them this year seeing as they've now been in the same position for almost 12 months...

I store mine stacked in wheel bags at the back of my garage.
Temperature is reasonably stable, it's dark most of the time and the wheel bags keep out the rest of the UV when the garage is open. Aside from the fridge it's also the coolest place in the house, any time of year.

That's your main enemy, sunlight.
Keeping them stacked somewhere cool and dark is key.

hmm good point while my shed is pitch black it does get hot in it saying that when I took wheels out didnt have to change the tyrepressures at all so any ideas if it really would cause problems

I always thought as long as they are not in direct sunglight / uv source its fine

If i had to chose between a cool place and a dark place, i'd chose the dark place. UV is more of a problem than heat.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Seems dark is the way to go. There is a bit of variation in terms of the orientation of the wheel when storing. Is laid flat the way to go or upright?

I have always been told when with weight to lay flat due to the load on a wider area its what I done last two summers and no loss of pressure

On a rim, inflated, then stack flat in a pile on top of each other.

Off a rim, stack upright in row next to each other.

As your car (and its tyres) lives outdoors and not in the dark nor in a temperature controlled environment, I wouldn't worry too much about UV exposure on your winters.

But common sense dictates to keep them cool, dry and out of light.

This is what I did, I usually rotate them everytime I wash the car.

Mine never get moved all summer, just stacked in the corner of the garage for 8 months.

Still good as new, I wouldn't get too hung up about it, you're more likely to damage your rims by accident with all that shuffling about!

Thats my thought and the soft carpet underlay helps to keep metal v metal issue away

My summers are in wheel bags stacked on top of each other, I'm not too worried about the light or uv as the bags filter much of this & they'd experience a lot more bolted to the car

Just to clarify, the UV is simply an age issue.

If you only run one set of tyres then you're probably going to replace them every couple of years so UV is not a problem, but if you're not doing huge mileages on your winters then they may well have enough tread to last 5 years or more.

Trouble is that 5 years of daily UV exposure would age the rubber much more than 3 months a year on the car and 9 months of the year in a dark shed or garage, and that's when you might start to see cracks in the rubber which could lead to catastrophic failure.

I've got 12 (yes, 12) wheels to store - 3 vehicles, all with a winter and summer set each) so I store them stacked 4 high at the back of my garage. Using some of that foam flooring/matting that's sold as gym flooring underneath them and between them. Seem to be no ill effects.

Agree UV is an ageing this, but millions (vast majority) of UK cars will do a lot more than 2 years on a set of tyres.

Even an 12K p/a car should do at least 3 years on one set, driven sensibly. Rotate them and you'll add another year or so.

My missus' Civic is coming up to 7 years old now, 40K and still got 10-15k left on the factory set of tyres, probably 10 years in total.

Only company cars / high milers will change every 2.

crumbs, i thought i was reading about a dangerous volatile substance not tyres

mine went in the shed last weekend on their sides, when i got them out of the shed last December they hadn't lost any pressure. they were covered in rabbit food, hay/straw and sawdust.

i wounder if that is permitted

some good info being batted around now. Seems like general concensus is;

Store in cool / dark place out of direct sunlight
laid flat if on rims
upright if not on rims
