Can i do this?

Hi, I want to do a JB4 and i AFE stage 2 intake but i dont have an oil cooler. Can i get away with this? I dont want to do an oil cooler or intercooler because i just dont want to sink in that much money since the car is 5 years old. the car also has 36k miles. i also would never track it and i would only run it on map 1

thanks guys

Depends how hard you really drive the car. Because the oil will get really hot in the car & you have no cooling, I wouldn't be surprised if the car over heated in the summer (especially now that we've been having some 100+ days in the Northeast).

Even in the winter, it's still possible to overheat on a long road trip since (once again) there is no oil cooler. Your call though, but it's important to remember that even stock cars were having overheating problems, so a tune certainly isn't going to help.

Newbies get told to use search when they ask questions, and when the answers are found, they aren't really the answer?

I pulled from the list that the most common tunes don't require oil coolers or a FMIC. Unless that changed, I'd say it is accurate enough.

Just trying to be helpful here.

Totally understand where you're coming from. A lot of the ppl here (myself included) are sick of the redundant threads. While none of the tunes require anything but an N54-powered 335, it is completely the owner's own choice what path to take when modifying their car. Here is what I would recommend as far as the mods to make for a strictly-street car:
  1. Tune
  2. Intake
  3. FMIC
  4. DPs
**If the car was going to see a decent amount of track time, an upgraded suspension & LSD would get added to the list.

While none of the tunes require oil coolers or FMICs, they should be added/upgraded if you want consistent & safe performance gains. Like I said, the oil cooler isn't a required part, but there's a reason why after 08 every N54 car received one (and that the 335is & 1M both receive upgraded cooling components) from the factory.

The OP can try moddin the car without adding the oil cooler, but I can't promise if the quality of the oil will be compromised over time & that the car won't go into "Limp Mode" after some aggressive driving.

I do not have an oil cooler on my car and haven't experienced any oil temps over 250.

If you have a 6 speed your less likely to overheat as you don't have the hot transmission fluid being cooled by the radiator.

Just like Kevo said, I have no oil cooler and never hit temps over 250 maybe 260 and I drive the car pretty hard. I make tons of long road trips on my car but those are all in the Northeast.

Im FBO also

I may be the minority but I fail to see the big deal with an upgraded FMIC for a DD car... I see it as an important part if you are consistently tracking your car or if you are driving around in hot weather all the time. We are currently approaching winter and for most people this mod will do next to nothing... its a dyno day / track day mod more than a daily driver mod... I would do DPs long before FMIC but that is purely my opinion. I saw the same situation on any other platform I've owned or worked on...

You're def in the minority, especially with all the data supporting the need for upgrading the FMIC. The OEM core can become easily heat soaked & with our tunes, we're pushing the timing into a much more aggressive area. While there's nothing wrong with leaving the OEM FMIC on, once it becomes heat soaked (which only takes a few aggressive pulls), the DME will start pulling timing & reduce performance.

Because I opted not to run meth & wanted to run a safe, high-power tune setting, I knew that I not only needed the required mods (tune, DPs), but I would also need the supporting mods (FMIC). Obviously ambiant temps play a very important role in performance (cold air = more HP), so an upgraded FMIC won't be as noticeable in the winter until you start romping on it. But then again most people aren't driving 335's in sub-40 degree weather aggressively, but they are driving their modified cars hard during the middle of July when it's consistently 80+ and an aftermarket FMIC will fight off heatsoak & more effectively cool ambiant temps then the OEM core.

I don't know how well the $300 Chinese eBay intercoolers work, but it's probably another option to consider.

Or just avoid running the more aggressive maps. I think I get plenty of DD power from map 1, which should be safe to run with a car that's otherwise stock.

Honestly a VRSF intercooler is cheap, and they look to be promising too. I have a stock oil-cooler on my car (one of the few 07s that did) and have never gone over 250, and thats in Floridas insane temperatures.
After my DP/DCI, im gettimg a FMIC. Thats next on my shoping list for sure(:

there are tons of threads out there asking the same question, long story short it depends on the dealer. Some will deny warranty work for an axle back, some will happily work on FBO cars. Any time you mod, you are violating the terms of the warranty, and bmw is well within their rights to deny warranty work. Some argue that the mod must be directly responsible for any damage before warrantt is denied, but ive nevef bought that line of reasoning. You mod, you assume the risk. Outside of removing my tune and dci before taking it in my dealership has been accomodating, theyve worked under the car with no mention of the 7" FMIC, and were reasonable about the dci (they politely asked me to remove it before they did the work under cpo).

whoops, I figured OP meant warranty...yea car insurance has nothing to do with mods, unless your car suffers serious damage and claims are opened on the aftermarket parts. Under those circumstances I have no idea what procedure is like, my car had a bumper+headlights+radiator replaced with insurance and the mods were never mentioned..but maybe thats because the damage was (relatively) minor and cosmetic.

You prob shouldn't of bought a 335 then . The forum proven story is everyone buys a tune, then justifies the cost of the DCIs, and from there it's a very quick downhill to FBO & other mods.

A majority of people run modifications with no oil cooler, it really depends on your driving habits and conditions.

If you start exceeding 250 oil temps, then you should look into an oil cooler upgrade, or take off the mods.

Let me know if you need any help with anything.

Insurance voided with Mods? Negative, never heard of that ever!

You seem so concerned about warranty and insurance... I say go with DCI and tune at first, an oil cooler would really help keep engine oils cool and from over heating. live a little and enjoy your car's hidden potential
