I don't think the reply is correct Viv! It contradicts what it says in my owners manual and brochure.

Looks like we're going to have to do some empirical research of our own.
As the bulb type for a foglight is the same as for a brake light (21W) I can only assume that the design of the reflector makes it illegal to be used as a brake light. Maybe in the case of the E92 BMW managed to adjust the reflector design sufficiently that the light can have dual functionality.

Just ordered a camcorder and I keep having bad thoughts about bullet cameras and in car mounts to go with it

I'm considering changing the 2nd bulb to an LED one and then fitting a pulse unit, this makes the 2nd lamp flash 25 times per second for 3 seconds then latch on to solid.
Some manufacturers cars do this already, its proven to get people's attention quicker than a solid red light. |

I always remember following a 320D on the M1 one day. It was heavy traffic and a bit stop start.
I recall seeing the brake lights come on on the car in front, then seeing them get brighter and thinking to myself oh that must be the 2 stage braking thing followed by oh s**t he's braking really hard isn't he. I am pretty sure my 2nd stage lights came on as well at that moment too. |

Holy thread resurection!!!
I do know other manufacturers have a stupid idea of putting the hazard lights on when you brake hard - Peugeot in particular. Our Peugeot Bipper work van does it, but its way too sensitive, just hard braking upto junctions or roundabouts sets the bloody hazards flashing and nobody knows which way you're going! |
