Finally pulling the trigger and buying my first BMW (saved up long enough to purchase one)...and I'm looking for one ideally with M-sport/navi/premium. I've found 3 that look interesting but not sure on the price point given the mileage...is it that much more expensive than a sports pkg version? (MSRP difference is ~2k?)

Also, what are people's experience with higher mileage BMWs? Original warranty is already over for the one with 53k miles as well as not sure how helpful is the CPO is tbh w/ its restrictions and fees.

Whats the community's thoughts on the below cars? I might pull the trigger and get a sports pkg version instead since its a lot cheaper (4th link). What would you do in my shoes?

The one from Shelly is way overpriced at 32k with that many miles. I am a road warrior myself and 53k miles in 3 years on a 335i is pretty rough and only 20k miles from typical preventative maintenance or failure repair costs.

The century west one is nice and less miles but you may run out of time on the facotry warranty before you get the miles and then the CPO kicks in. I don't know that dealer so I don't know how well you can negotiate a deal with them. I don't care for how red the wood looks, maybe it's just the lighting.

The one at Sterling is very nice, I would go for that one but negotiate the price down a little bit. I have dealt with some of their staff in the past, they are reasonable. It looks the cleanest to me, but that may just be a better photographer.

The AutoTrader listing one is priced well and I am a big fan of the red leather, but prefer it with an Alpine White body. It is curious to me that the other Century west car is only 2k miles less on the clock but 5k dollars more. If they want that much of a premium for the M sport, negotiate this one to 29,850.00 and go buy the body kit for $2k. Other than the bumpers, steering wheel and shifter, there is no difference from the sport package. All those things can be changed easily.

They are probably lease returns and may have been abused a bit by the original owner but should be relatively ok. BMW can see how roughly the engine was operated and usually does not CPO the ones that are ridden hard and put away wet.

I am going to be buying a CPO X5 xdrive35d in the near future and I have been researching on the same thoughts you are having. I personally want at least 10k miles and 1 year left on the factory warranty to really shake down the car. I have never dealt with a CPO warranty but the one I am looking at will cover an additional 2 years or 50k miles, which gives me a few years of piece of mind.

Well, for what it's worth, I've got 99K on my 2008 e91 and the car drives like its got 20K on the clock! As for pricing differences on certain packages...yes, it makes a huge difference. Premium packaged vehicles typically run $2-3K more than non-packaged cars. The same can be said for sport and winter packaged cars. Once you've narrowed down your search, I would ask for maintenance records if available and do your homework (sounds like you already are) on common problems/issues with the models you're looking at. In my experience, if a BMW is maintained correctly, it will last a very long time

I have a 158,000 miles on my 06 330i. I bought it for 24k with 49,000 miles on it. If the car is in great condition it was likely well maintained and as long as you plan on doing the same it will likely be fine. Mine has had far less issues then our Nissan Murano and has held up overall far better.

Let's be honest here, most of the e90/92's that aren't 335i are pretty normal with reliablity. Things will break like other cars, it just might cost you more to fix. Don't buy a used n54 335i. Everyone seems to have great luck with the 325/330i.

I would get #3(sterling BMW).. seems to be a fair price for a car that has CPO they will probably be willing to go down a few too.. btw under california law a CPO car is considered sold as if it were "new". My 335i was CPO'd and thank god because it was riddled with problems.. 50$ deductible isn't anything to complain about for a repair that would have cost me $2,000+.. at the end I was able to lemon law my car because it was a CPO.

Whaat? It may not be as bulletproof as the 328/330, but the n54 is a great engine. I bought mine at 42k and now have 62k. The only thing that has gone wrong is a bad fuel injector. Especially if you can work on it yourself, its not a bad car at all.

To the OP, I wouldn't stray away from 50k+ miles. Just be sure to do your homework, get a CARFAX, and have an independent shop inspect the car before purchase. All the standard used-car stuff. For pricing, I got my 2008 e90 335i with the 42k miles for $24k a little over a year ago. That's with Sport Package only (I would've liked nav and a 335xi, but they just weren't available in the area).

Get as low mileage as you can and not CPO, then purchase the BMW warranty yourself. If your dealer won't negotiate on the extended warranty search and you will find there are dealers who will.

CPO just means it is a car with the extended warranty included, and the other extended warranties are better--you will want platinum to cover the idrive if you are getting an idrive car.

Expand your search area to find the best deal.

I totally agree with this one - as long as the car has some good original warranty left. The CPO warranty is simply the 6/100 gold extended warranty. 7/100 platinum is way better (it covers the iDrive and Nav where gold does not plus the 3rd yr) and it costs about the same ($3200ish) as many of the dealers are adding to the price of the cars to CPO them (tires, clean up and fixing everything on their dime vs warranty from the customer -if you believe the dealer I worked with). If they are already CPOed, then you may not be able to Un-CPO them though.

Plus, what is with the prices in CA though? I just bought an 11 335d with nav premium and CW (no-sport - didn't want the bigger wheels and stiffer suspension) for $30,500 with 22k mi and the 11 335i xDrives were similarly priced. Now I do believe I got a great deal on mine, but $37k for a 2010 with the N54? Personally I would stay away from the 2010s from what I heard about the N54s, but if 2010s are that much in CA then I don't even want to ask about 2011s.

Here's how I look at these cars: It's a luck of the draw.

I bought mine with 78k miles because it was CPO and still had over a year of warranty left. I did my research and I saw owners coming up with problems at every possible mileage whether that be at 20k or 60k and so on. I've had my car for about a year now, I'm up to 85k miles and haven't had a single problem and the only maintenance I've done is an oil change this past summer. Car has run flawlessly and like a dream.

Interesting... could you elaborate on how they can determine this? I know they can check to see how many times Launch Control has been used, but that would only work on SMG and DCT cars.

Search more or extend the mile radius to 200 miles.. I drove 150 miles to pick up my 335i (31k for 31k miles lol) and have owned her for exactly 6 months and 6 days... knock on wood she runs like a dream I have an oil change and plugs (only cause I'm anal) coming up.

Don't buy a used n54? Great advice for people on these boards to read... Thought this board was for enthusiasts not pessimists. People trying to sell I'm sure appreciate that and people looking to buy are dealing with enough questions.

Thats ridiculous. The OP wants to know what to look for so he is getting some good answers. My 09 335 had about 55,000 miles on it after 36 months (young car with high mileage is better than old car with low imo) and I replaced injectors (stranded twice), hpfp, entire steering, hvac fan, radio.........
I wouldnt ever buy one of these things with out warranty. There is a reason aftermarket warranty is expensive and there is a reason these cars are inexpensive second hand.

x2, OP is looking for honest advice and i'm sure he appreciates an honest answer, though i do think that statement itself is not true (i would buy a used n54) but regardless the point is to provide the OP with REAL advice not to do our best to maintain the $$$ of our cars

after 50k i wouldnt buy without a warranty or it had all of the common failure points (turbos, hpfp, injectors, gasket leaks) replaced under warranty already. theres a lot of high priced repairs that are fairly common so if they havent been done expect them to occur sooner than later.
