RFID tag under dash trim...? (pics)
I was taking apart my dash trim earlier and there was an RFID tag slapped under the long trim piece, just above the drivers cup holder (iDrive) near the glove box.
does anyone know what this may be for? is it safe to remove without causing something else to stop working? will the shady bmw secret service execs come after me? thanks for any insight

They use these RFID tags for inventory control. Mainly for inventory accuracy and financial postings.
Sometimes barcodes are used to verify a part passed from Warehouse to Assembly area, but the caveat to barcodes is that the part needs to be oriented with the barcode facing the scanner. The beauty of RFID is that directional orientation during transport doesnt matter. If the part passes through the scanner, it gets recorded as consumed in the production process. |

RFIDs are used in production process control. As the car progresses though the assembly process, the parts management system keeps track of where the particular car is on the assembly line so as to send the model and trim-specific parts to the next assembly station. For example, if the car was ordered with adaptive HID headlights, the correct headlights are at the headlight assembly station when the car gets to that place in the assembly process.

I figured it was probably something with inventory management at the plant, but wanted to hear what others had to say as well before I concluded that.
thanks for the laughs, fellas. I'm going to hollow out the space behind it (there is a little leatherette patch and some foam padding behind it) and place some neodymium magnets behind it to create some stealth magnetic phone mounting point behind the trim. so far everything seems alright, and with the right magnets, you can get some serious sticking power from back there
