I'm after getting my 4 door 320d m sprayed in alpine White excluding under bonnet.It's currently sapphire black
What price would you think is fair upto I've been quoted from 900 to 1500 and the 4 bodyshops I've been to all have ovens and great portfolios and cars in there what look excellent

My local body shop told me £2K for that job.
Considering that, you have been given very fair price IMO.

Sorry to be a little pessimistic but I think you get what you pay for.
£900 for a full respray gives me a gut feeling it is a slap dash job.

I would expect to pay £900 for a couple of panels done professionally.
Done properly a lot needs to come off the car and I wouldn't want anyone breaking clips and tearing seals off my car but I guess for that reason I wouldn't do it regardless of price unless I had to. Just my opinion

Have you considered getting it wrapped? Wrapping should be cheaper and you don't have to notify the DVLA of a colour change.

I can't see a £900 full respray being a professional job. £2000 sounds about right. Go off reputation rather than price.

The price you've been quoted is far too cheap.

I would also never buy a car that has been resprayed a different colour and I know many people have the same opinion.

For the cost of a good respray it might be worth looking to buy the car in the colour you want rather than spending £2000 to make the car less desirable to sell on.

I'm not a fan of wrapping either. Not only would it scare me what the wrap might be hiding, the finish is nowhere near a good paint finish and shine.

Yes but if I look at it from coddy's point of view. I can see where he is coming from and owning a black sapphire car like a lot of the other members. This colour shows up scratches and finger prints like there is no tomorrow. And if the car is a few years old it may have a few scratches and dents in. Spraying the full car will sort all of these problems in one go and will make it look brand new. It may even improve the resale value if its a good job and that comes down to you get what you pay for. 900 sound way to cheap. It cost me 250 for a full rear bumper spray. Just my opinion.

At £900 there is no chance that you are getting more than a spray of paint, certainly not spending time to fix dents.

With his car plus £2k he could look at a better car in original white.

The fact the car would be white on the outside and black on the inside of panels, it is always going to stand out.

Black is hard work to keep clean but white also shows up any dirt.

OP:

Get a dentmaster treatment if needed, full detail / touch up / machine polish / paint correction / etc and you'd be looking at a BETTER than new black car for a few hundred quid tops.

And the full detail would spruce up the inside too. win win.


My father in law owns a garage where they spray vintage cars (astons, E types, healeys etc) and believe me to do it properly to a factory appearance is WEEKS of work, stripping the whole car, sometimes they'll spend 50 hours just prepping and sanding a single bonnet.

Not much change from 10 grand for a pukka job.

Some good points raised here...... Especially you will be looking at around £500 for a proper job inc dent removal etc ( this is one I would personally go for).

However what if the OP has decided to not sell the car anyway? I passed on my E46 to my younger cousin, he enjoys it, and most likely will pass it on to his brother next year. I guess it will stay in the family. Much like my E90 now, eventually I will buy another and strip this one down into a full track car.
