So anyone have any news about the new cylinder head that is suppose to fix this? The last few days my car started with it ticking extremely loud. I havent been driving my E90 much since Im unemployed at the moment so it seems letting the car sit for a while really drains that oil out of the lifters. Which is making it tick loudly everytime ive started my car these days to move it.

I called the dealer to see if theres anything new that came around to fix this.. like the new cylinder head. But i couldnt even get through to a service rep.. only the receptionist who just made an appointment for me anyway.

Mine did this last year when it was low on oil, I checked the oil level and the computer said it was full. I didn't beleave it so I added a quart of oil in and the noise went away drove the car and checked the oil again and it still said full not over-full. I took it in to the dealer to get them to change my oil sensor and they wouldnt do it. They drained my oil and mesured it and it was within spec and I said well that meanes it doesnt work because I just added 1 quart of oil when it said it was full so it was really 1 quart low and it didnt tell me. They keep insisting the sensor is within spec so now I just change my oil every 5k because I know the sensor doesnt work.

Hello Guys,

Im back. Went about 4-5000 miles without it ticking again, but once I hit the 10,500 mark, it ticks 5 days a week or so. Now at 11,400 miles just when everyone else started to see a ramp up in the number of ticks. I have my year oil change coming up at the end of October and i will keep everyone posted on what info I get. When I brought up the ticking sound to my SA at my intermediate oil change (5000 miles) is when the SA told me that the noise was normal until I told him it went on for 15 minutes and to which he replied, "yeah, thats not normal."

I'll let you know what ha.ppens.

Normal my ass! I just got back from a drive and noticed mine has the nice valve tick. This is FAR from normal and BMW better get there shit together. This is just plain poor design work by BMW. Really sad. Looks like I get to start the process of trying to have mine fixed. But at this point I have yet to read a post where someone has actually had it fixed permanently.

Now that I have the ticking much more frequently, I notice if I start my car and the ticking sound immediately starts, sometimes (about 70% of the time), if I turn the car off and restart it, the ticking doesnt appear. Just an observation at this point.

I've noticed the ticking upon start up, but goes away in short order. I might notice it 1x/week. I'll bring it up with my SA when I go in for oil change in a few 1k miles.

My 330i is currently in the shop for intermittent ticking. They have given me an '07 530i as a loaner. I've had the car since Saturday, and last night I heard the same ticking in the 530i. I will advise them of the ticking in their loaner car as well.

Let it be said that the 530i isn't half as enjoyable to drive, nor as responsive as the 330i.

Just got a call from the dealer. They weren't able to recreate the problem.

Welcome to the club. I think we have all experienced this one. Just wait a little longer, it will begin ticking daily.

Mine is at the dealer right now and they can't duplicate the problem or whatever they are hearing is normal. I told them to keep it longer, but I seriously cannot believe that this is "normal". My SA keeps saying that its completely normal, but if that was true, if I start any E90 on the lot, it should tick, then I'll believe that its normal.

If I don't get it fixed or resolved, I'm definitely not going to consider another BMW even though I was thinking of the M3 or 5 series for my next vehicle.

My car is at about 23000km. Its also doing the first maintanence visit while my car is at the dealer. Been there 4 days and counting. 3rd time I've taken it in to complain about the ticking, as when it does tick, you can hear it down the street and is just ridiculous and embarrasing.

Since the weather started changing around here mine has begun to tick yet again.
Seems like mine doesn't like the cold weather, so it makes sure I know about it.
I've taken it in twice, but they couldn't ever recreate the problem. What a surprise.
I love driving around campus sounding like a massive bomb.

At least you guys have the lemon law in the states. We Canadians are screwed since we don't have that law and our cars cost more.

I can only hope that the dealer will respect me as a customer and somehow repair or offer some options in hopes of winning me back as a repeat customer.

BMW just says that they can't reproduce the problem when you give it to them, which in fact is actually the truth, it only happens rarely until the warranty expires.

Well, they've followed the standard procedure and bleed the system because they heard the recording that I made of the sound. They haven't heard the sound since they've had the car for the past 5 days, and they have submitted a PUMA for further instructions. I hope that the bleed will be enough to fix it.

Its just so frustrating because my ticking noise stops after 10-15 minutes of 'spirited' driving, and doesn't do it again for a few more days most of the time. I have to drive on the interstate for over 30 minutes to get to my dealer, so naturally it doesn't do it when I get it there.
Why hasn't a service bulletin been filed for this problem yet? Seriously, how many PUMAs have been filed...

There has been a service bulletin. It is to bleed the engine. But it doesnt work, after a few weeks it will start all over.
