Automatic Transmission Fluid Change
I did a search and couldn't find my info.
When do you guys change the ATF fluid? BMW states that it's lifetime, but what is defined as lifetime? 100k miles? Thanks alot. |

I did the change at 56K miles, only because I bought the car with 55k on it(2006 330i). I think it should be changed at 50K if you plan to keep the car long term like I do. I found the filter and ATF here
http://www.rmeuropean.com filter #24-11-7-571-217 ATF #83-22-0-142-516 The filter is part of the plastic pan. I used 7 liters of ATF on the change but bought 9. You might want to change the sealing sleeve while your doing the change. I heard after I did the change that may of the cars will leak from it. It is the sleeve where the harness connects to the trans, on mine it was on the back right side. Mine started leaking about 6 months after I did the filter change. To get it out you need to drop the pan. On the right side below the sealing sleeve you will see a tab, push the lock on the tab, then pull down. This releases the sealing ring. Before you do this first disconnect the harness, after the tab is pulled down, slide the sealing ring out. It has 2 o-rings on one end and a square sealing ring on the other end. Insert the new one, make sure the orings are all the way in, then push the tab in the transmission up. Put your new pan on and fill. I think the pan screws use a torx 40 |

I'd say between 50-75k if you plan on keeping the car longterm. It can't hurt, so you might as well.
