Rough idle - overheating
Hey there. I have a BMW 325i E90 which has developed for some time a fluctuating RPM when standing at idle. Up until the engine starts to heat up there is no fluctuation in the RPM. But once it heats up it varies between 650 and 670 RPM continuously. It's anoying and there's something definitely wrong. I'm very upset that BMW can't figure out what's wrong. I've been to BMW had numerous diagnostics done but they can't figure out what's wrong. I also have had problems when starting the engine in winter. It would start and they die. I had to try 3 times before it would start completely. If I pressed the gas pedal before it cut out, the engine would be fine and continue working. They updated my software and everything was fine for a while. Now this problem also came back. The car shakes slightly when it starts.
Any thoughts? Last edited by michael_ro; 03-14-2012 at 01:45 PM.. |

Check the air intake for tears. Look really close as it might be hard to see. I had the same thing happen to me. Come to find out there was a small tear low on the air intake. As the car warmed up the tear would open up a little and allow nothing but hot extremely hot air from the manifold to be sucked in past the filter. The whole air intake only cost about $50 and I put it on myself. Let me know how you make out

I changed part number 13. It wasn't a tight fit so I bought a new one. Nothing changed. What did you change exactly? Did you change any part from the link below? http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...56&hg=11&fg=40 |

I changed the entire air intake. Nothing changed.
But I found oil on the DISA and after it inside the manifold. Also oil after the throtlle housing assy towards the manifold. Last edited by michael_ro; 03-24-2012 at 02:14 AM.. |

In the coolant no.
White smoke out the exhaust yes (looks more like steam thogh). But from what I know the smoke should be blue to indicate oil in the combustion chamber ! Last edited by michael_ro; 03-24-2012 at 02:39 AM.. |

Change plugs and coils you havent yet and then reset adaption setting using a BT tool then remove airbox and clean the two TMAP/ MAP sensor with mass flow cleaner the one on high and low side. This took care all may weird idle problems, Car runs like a charm now NO idle issues at all.

The car starts acting up only when it heats up. I changed the entire air intake. If there was a vacuum problem it would have been resolved after the replacement of the air intake hoses.
Parts 10, 12, 13. http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...47&hg=13&fg=20 I cleaned the MAF with alcohool although it was clean as a whistle. I change the air filter every 10.000km. Spark plugs have 40.000km, coils are fine. I also changed the engine temperature sensor. I had an update for the software of the car at an BMW dealer. However I found oil in the intake manifold. I don't think thats normal.... Last edited by michael_ro; 03-24-2012 at 08:39 AM.. |

I serviced the car at the biggest BMW dealer in Bucharest. They said they checked for vacuum leaks (electronically - reading the values of the mass air flow sensor?!). However it was not as I saw it done on youtube using a smoke machine. They don't don't have that smoke machine and nor does any other service in Bucharest. I also sprayed brake cleaner almost all across the engine. No change in idle. A vacuum leak might not be present.
I am going to change the spark plus next week and I see if something changes. Last edited by michael_ro; 03-30-2012 at 01:47 PM.. |

What they did is to check for the air to fuel ratio and short and long term trims. If the trims are within a certain spec (usually within plus or minus 25% for lean or rich), then they called it a pass. Do you have the data for the trims that they supplied to you? The leak could also be in the exhaust lines, which will throw the O2 sensor reading off. The test they did should show the O2 sensor voltage as well. Oil in intake usually indicates oil fumes getting past the PCV (Positive Crankshaft Ventilation) valve into the throttle area. Smoke test is a really good test for all leaks, but it appears it is not available to you in your area. So, I would first start with recording the data from OBD2 port using a monitor and looking at all data from startup and idling to running. The entire recorded data can then be looked at to point to problem areas. Vanos solenoids cleaning is another good to do with rough idling problems.

Rough Idle + White Smoke + Overheating, I usually associate this to head gasket.. any oil in coolent or coolent loss?

Mine fluctuates a little also but only sometimes. I thought that was normal for our cars because of the low idle.
