Anyone watch the PS4 launch last night ?

I dabble a bit with CGI .... the new PS4 next-gen graphics look amazing.

I'm in.

Obviously - I'll buy one of these at launch. I've done so with every console. I also like that they've not jumped on the bandwagon and massively altered what is a very good controller just in the name of 'advancement'. I'd call the wii u a massive gimmick using outdated technology and that so much of the purchase price of the machine is in the controller means they've skimped on spec to keep the costs aimed at their target market successfully.

The big disappointment to me is the lack of an SSD. Why oh why are they sticking with disk based storage? Load times are by far and away the biggest frustration of the current console and they had a chance to put that right which has been missed. This is very frustrating.

Agreed, people have been moaning on a lot of forums about "Why didn't they show the console, why is the controller the same, it's no better than a mid spec PC"

Sod all that, I don't really care what the console looks like and the controller is fine so no need to change it with the exception that they should make the bottom triggers bigger as standard. The specs are good enough to do 1080p resolution at 60 FPS and they are doing some clever stuff with the memory and CPU\GPU bandwidth so I think this will punch far above it's weight as all consoles do.

The PS3 has been great but it's well overdue an update. If the next one is like a PS3 only better, which it will be then I'll be more than happy. Oh and I've had both a PS3 and an Xbox 360 so no loyalty to either, I'll just buy whichever one comes out first and I'll probably end up having both anyway so I really can't understand the fanboy furore that has erupted over the new consoles before they've even come out.

You should watch the full presentation - start up and load times were discussed at some length, with the promise of almost instant switch on and load times with clever buffering. Dedicated chip allows same time uploading/downloading of media in background.

They also discussed their new cloud technology and store setup. So that you can start to play a bought game from the store within seconds, while it continues to download.

It is something they've spent a lot of time on - so, quite frankly if all those measures work as expected they can use wet string as a recording media as far as I am concerned.

Well I don't have super fast broadband at home and prefer 1 player games to online play - so none of that mean tooo much to me.

It'll be 18 month before I move home most likely and actually have decent broadband for the first time.

With Be at the moment, brilliant service but distance to the exchange means I only get 3.5 meg down. I don't want BT's fibre due to their traffic shaping and Virgin isn't an option - so for now I'm stuck with what I have.

Sky Fibre Pro is an option but 2 year contracts aren't an issue due to my planning to move out.

In any case off topic But cloud based anything for me is usually just an invitation for a degraded service right now. Ho hum.

I hardly play the PS3 anymore. The PS4 does not even look like that much of a big jump visually anyway.
I am sure its got great new technology and all that crap. But for me crap stuff like online multiplayer glitching and other rubbish make it worse.
I would much rather use a dedicated gaming rig PC as that would still blow the PS4 out of the water.
Or wait until proper interactive gaming ala PS7 or Xbox 1080 or whatever.

Lol at that video!

Whether I get it on release day will depend on what the title line up is like.

I wonder why Sony have gone first. I've got a feeling that MS's offering will be very good.

I wont be getting one at launch like i did with the ps3 simply because i have too many games i still haven't played on the ps3.
I'll definitely get one at some point but there isn't much at release to get me too excited.

Is it true that you won't be able to play PS3 games on it and I've hear the strange thing.
When you buy a game it's coded to that machine so you can't take it to your mates to play and you can't trade it in as it's locked to your machine??

Surely this can't be? Sounds like Apple...

Didn't EA start something like that with their games? A unique online code ruining the secondhand market.

I hope those things you've said aren't true.

It was a rumour sparked by some patents Sony placed.

It has pretty much been confirmed not to be the case.

This is now what I'm waiting for! I'm more interested in Microsofts input to the latest gaming machine than Sony purely because I prefer them.

If the rumours about coding the games to the machines are true then that's going to be an idiot move on Sony's part. Even if EA have already started that shouldn't be the way to go with regards to pirating etc.

Sony announcung first was a clever move, microsoft launched first last time - and will probably announce at CES. And even though we know a great deal about the ps4, tbe actual release of the console design will steal column inches.

I'll be interested to see what Microsoft present.

It is not true. As you say - it would be idiotic to lock down your new console, especially when a competitor could also release a new console without.

This is very true. I will always prefer Microsoft purely due to a few certain games. Also, the fact that the GTA games are on both platforms doesn't matter now!
