Leatherette wrapped interior trim COMPLETED!
Re: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=227304
Made a new thread so it's less cluttered and more clear. ***NOTE: I will update this thread in the spring once I can remove my winter mats, do a full detail inside and outside and get a professional photoshoot done. Stay tuned for new photos later. Background: The brushed aluminum looks really agressive but unfortunately it scratches way too easily. Especially with the iDrive and the sunglasses tray, that center console area gets a lot of access and my iron ring doesn't exactly make it any easier. Had three big deep scratches and a few areas of pitting and the car is only 2 months old. I didn't want to go CF because it looks a little too sporty and I wanted to go for a more luxurious look. So, I had the idea of wrapping my trim with leather or imitation leather. Solution: I contacted Richy from BMW MotorSport (******** Motorsports) and had him find some leather-like vinyl material (aka leatherette) to wrap my center console trim. Instructions were to find some sort of automotive leatherette which is treated for UV and moisture, thick enough so it gives it a luxurious feel, yet thin enough so it'll fit. Basically the idea is sort of like the back side fo the BlackBerry Bold and the M3's center console trim. I did consider wrapping everything but I like the contrast of the aluminum trim and I'll probably wrap it all once the trim starts to show wear. The center console is probably the most accessed and obvious place for wear and tear on the aluminum trim. Price: Contact Richy ******** from ******** MotorSport (bimmerpost user: BMW MotorSport) for pricing. Given that this is the first trim done by him, we're not sure what to price it and I have agreed not to disclose the experimental price that was quoted for me. Photos: Here are photos from ******** MotorSports: http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/inde...lbumId=1277375 Here are photos of the trim being installed and after installation. Enjoy! |

You "ARE" next buddy. You still haven't seen my CF trim in person, you are going to love it in your ride Mike. Big difference. When are we doing it?

That's the truth. The photos don't do much justice for how nice it looks. I actually wish BMW used this material for all plastic parts. The leatherette trim actually makes the car look more luxurious than with the previous brushed aluminum.
I am absolutely pleased with Richy's work and selection of materials. What I'm interested to see is someone using this idea with Coral Red seats. I can just imagine how awesome that will look with the trim in Coral Red too or maybe even a light grey. In terms of install, the wrapped part actually adds a bit of bulk which made it a bit harder to put in as opposed to the stock trim. The stock trim was almost a "drop in and click" but this one you just have to be patient and even use a bit of extra force just to compress the fabric a bit so that you can get the trim in. Took me about 5 mins as opposed to the 20 seconds before. Still very easy so it's not an issue. |

I believe this mod would look fantastic in any color interior but you are right Coral Red would looks awesome. Here is a picture of the M3 Leather Center Console which looks identical to yours. |
