How do you explain running full ethanol or mix for years with our issues on newer indexes?

obviously they made revisions, but when the n54 first came out, it was one of the first DI engines and piezo injectors were used primary diesel engines which has no ethanol.

the thought was the ethanol ate away at the piezo crystals which turned there fine mist into a leaky faucet. there other threads of people mentioning this.

This could be ones of the reasons why we dont hear a lot of european n54's with leaky injectors compared to the amount in the US

The index 12's are relatively new and majority of people do not run e85, either they dont need it or dont have consistent access. The posts you see in this forum are probably the 1% of actual 335i owners.

Hopefully the index 12's will last a long time but you can see there was a correlation between the ethanol and leaky injectors. Maybe its not a issue now with the index 12's, but i would prefer not to run e85. Just my 2 cents. No one knows for sure other then probably BMW but i doubt they will admit it.

I think Tony has said that he has to replace and injector or two in his race car if it sits for a while after running ethanol, so the ethanol connection seems valid.

What about 335's in Brazil? From what I understand, all pumps there are E25 at a minimum.

Wouldn't stories of injector failure in that country alone be overwhelming?

probably smaller sampling size and the people who are buying those cars are not middle class people.

I looked up the price for a m240i that sells for around 48-50k usd in the US.

It starts at 95k usd in Brazil. If you can afford a 100k car, a 3k repair bill probably isnt as big of a deal, have multiple cars or your not keeping the car long enough to care.

Not saying its fact, just a theory, but could be one of the reasons why BMW ditched the piezo injectors in the n55.

Either way doesnt really matter at this point, the index 12 seems to be working so far.

well, the public rationale was

AFRs could not be run at the lean burn mixture of .eu n54s so the benefits for the piezo design was not worth the additional cost for .us

Can't really see how it could be that drastically different myself.. but..

i'm sure cost was a factor too, but even if it was the ethanol, i doubt they would admit it and open themselves up to class action lawsuits.
