Not driven the S5 but plenty of other Audis. Too many use "pretend" 4WD (Haldex - even the TTRS!!), too many use a heavily turbo'd food blender for an engine (the hateful 1.8T and slightly less hateful 2.0T), too many are awkward to drive and the S-Line kit just trashed the ride with no performance advantage.

But they generally look nice and of course the interiors are hard to beat. Shame my Dad's Quattros all have brown velvet seats!!

For really good steering feel in a car made in this millenium you need to drive:

The last shape MR2
An Elise
A Focus ST170 or Ford Puma
A GT3

S5 imo is a car that is more than capable of rapid cross country driving with exceptional grip for a car of it's size, more than enough poke and was involving to drive. I really liked it but haven't driven other Audi models just this one oh and the TT which was nice but no Cayman S imo. Bear in mind I've owned two BMW's and driven all 6 that my father owned over the years.

Expensive Skodas don't think so lol maybe Porsches will be soon also.
I dont agree. For a V8 and how it looks id expect more.

335i went quicker round anglesey than an S5 (a 335d quicker than a 335i round brunters) and they only trap at 100-101mph over the quartermile.

They are quick off the line (when launched well) and can do mid 13's so quick car with a low trap speed (due to 4wd).

So not a better rapid cross country car compared to a 335i/335d in my onion!

Have you driven one then?

I'm talking normal every day driving, totally not interested in tracks tbh as it's not a measure of how a car is used 99% of the time. Overall package is good imo, they can be easily tuned as well with increases in already good torque figures and increases in bhp. The S5 is of course a N/A engine.

Think the VBH track thing there was 600th of a second in it against the 335i but again means absolutely nothing in the real world. Dry track also.

Okay - the S5 is decent. But very few other models are as good as their daft prices suggest.

So pretty much a muchness. but what ive seen etc, it is not a better car than the 335's.

Yes the interior is far stylish!

Easily tuned for lots of cash (supercharger lol)

Defo. pretty much of a muchness and I never said better, it's all personal choice ultimately. All very good cars imo.

Standard bhp is 354, torque 440nm @3,500. £300 gets you a tweeked ECU with 10-15% power gains so 400 bhp possible on that alone.

Word on the street is that the RS5 will be using more of Porsche's technology in the AWD stakes. The AWD on the S5 is already very similar (not as sophisticated) to Porsche's system but is 60/40 split and rear wheel biased. Audi and Porsche already use the same manufacturer for their manual gearboxes apparently (so I was told by my Porsche dealer) and the RS5 is also rumoured to be having a LSD as standard. Defo. looks like their going for the 4.2 V8 kicking out 450 bhp - interesting stuff.

This year, not one has posted... a 59 plater (sept 1st)

Just shows the credit crunch has affected everyone... Especially new cars sales.
Back on topic..... well remembered Carl.

I was one of those who picked up a '57 plate - my lovely, and much missed, LMB E92 335d M Sport. A great day and I am now seriously wanting to get back into a BMW. My aspirations for an E60 M5, is probably just that - an aspiration. I don't think I could every justify the running costs and although I am smitten having driven one I don't think I will ever own one. My budget would put me in a 3/4 year old M5 and I probably couldn't keep pace with the maintenance/running costs of an ///M car of that age.

So, I have been looking at other current models, I do like the new Z4 but the one I keep looking at over and over again is the Z4 Coupe - the 3.0Si Sport in particular.

Im friends with a few guys with S5's, all their cars came out under Audi's quoted power figure and have re-maps and exhausts which gave them approx 25HP total,

when we race there still quite a way behind the mapped D.

They only get approx 10-15HP with the re-map and a further 10ish from exhaust.

All dyno'd and verified, and also at the track!

Petay, i want an M5 also!

Oh absolutely!! Can't wait for the RS5 to come out

You going to UK8 Kevin?

Carl - Real world driving is all that matters to me and drivers abilities vary too much. But yes, it's nice to currently own a proper quick car.

Thing is Helen, you need a proper drive to make a real difference on the twisties on the road.

Ive hammered an M3 on the road. If i was in the M3 on the twisties it would have left my 335d.

Well, it's taken me 5 days, but finally spotted a '59' plate. A 911 Turbo - worth waiting for I suppose - gorgeous. A slightly unusual pale blue colour but nice and I'd not say no!!
