335d PCV Catch Can Question

So ... has anybody done a "catch can" modification to the 335d?

This seems to be common on many direct injection engines (and diesels like VW TDI's) with EGR to help reduce intake carbon buildup.

The BMW 335i's have multiple specific solutions for this, but I haven't seen any for the 335d.

Today, I disconnected and looked at the PCV "Vent Pipe" (No. 11 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...49&hg=11&fg=15) and this revealed an obvious source of oil contamination being sucked into the intake.

With all the recent discussion about intake clogging I'm wondering why having a "catch can" modification for the 335d hasn't received more attention?

Wow, good timing,TDI. I literally just googled this not even seei your post 20 minutes ago.

I just started giving this thought after seeing the amount of oil that had accumulated in the box in which my old intercooler was sitting on its side...also spent my morning with diesel truck guys all of whom had performed EGR deletion, straight piped the EGR cooler, and removed DPF (where applicable)...will continue search and report back, but I'm definitely curious to know what turns up from the forums.

My initial thought was that one of the Burger kits should be able to be modified with reasonable simplicity, but this is still in its infancy as far as research goes.

FYI, Terry at BMS confirmed that his can will work, but that the hoses would have to be done up by the installer as no kit is available. He stated that he was vague on the details, but he vaguely remembered some of the diesels at which he looked not having hoses that could be disconnected (thus cutting would be required).

@TDIwyse, this is your ride, shown above, correct? Looks like at least some are capable of being disconnected.

Yeah, that's my car. It was only a couple metal clips to remove and that connection was easily separated. I didn't try to disconnect the other end though. Was just looking for evidence of oil ... and found it.

Great job TDi I inquired about this at a site that did this and never got a response anyway I firmly believe it can be modified if so Im willing to get it done for our cars and therefore avoid major hassles later down the road!!

That looks like blowby from the crankcase breather. Are you saying that is routed back to the intake on these engines?

the issue is that its 95% plastic tubing, and not round tubing either. Ive looked it over a few times but havent gotten serious about it yet. I cant see any good solutions except possibly buying a new section of plastic pipe with round end and cutting into it to make use of the round ends with the clip connections. Did you see any long enough sections of rubber hose that you could take the hose out and run extra hose to a catch can and back? The only section of rubber I saw was the 90* elbow near the front of the engine and there wasnt enough room to make two connections there.

Is that suppose to look normal? My previous car, Mitsubishi Evo X had the same thing and the tech said it's normal.

It looks to me like it's round just after the oil fill cap as it makes the 90 deg bend. There's also a little metal clip that holds the tube in place around that point. It also looks round right as it comes out of the "breather" but quickly turns squarish.

Could probably cut the plastic "vent pipe" right as it comes out of the breather and hose clamp a tube there and route to a catch can and then bring the other tube over to the 90 deg bend area.

Hoooper, why don't you give that a try and let us know how it works :-)

I'd agree it's "normal". But I don't think that means it's "good". This will cause a bunch of oil/sludge buildup in the intake track.

I'm guessing most peoples intercoolers are also oil filmed and suffering from reduced efficiency due to this. No wonder there's reports of oil leaking out the intercooler piping ...

some intercoolers have drains for this... I guess ours don't.

Yeah, I agree that is probably the best route. I need to look into how much that tube cost before I destroy it.

Excellent. I couldn't find a place to buy only the tube. Seems like realoem says it and the breather only come together?

I like this catch can:

Would there be enough space to install this on our Ds. Moreover, how difficult and realistic of an install is it?

Here is my Burger Tuning Motorsports catch can that I had a custom Wiggins fitting set up made for.I have fittings and hoses from Nascar that I am using.
P.S. search some threads that i started and you will find that I posted a thread about a catch can deal with Burger Tuning. Nobody helped out so I did it myself.

Excellent. I'll search for your posts.

Also, how much "stuff" are you collecting in that catch can?

Nice... I guess we should

For the sake of conversation, I was thinking of something like this for the hose...
