Just wondering if its a common thing

I cant believe its still an issue, when I had my e46 and 3 years ago had discs changed by dealer the the hubs where painted. Just noticed on my E90 -09 plate with 25k on clock and the rear discs are completely rusted.

Absolutely disgusting I think seems some painting is in order, any recommendations on whats best paint to use

Had my wheels changed yesterday and whilst the old ones were off the hubs were pretty crap and rusty. Am tempted to clean them up and paint them myself one weekend when there is nothing on. My car is a late 2005, considering its age they aren't in that bad nick but I don't like knowing that they are rusty

hammerite smooth spray paint is good, and yes its very common, i had an 08 Z4 coupe before this one ive got now and it was the same

Wire brush, phosphoric acid, brush on silver smoothrite.

Did mine last weekend, rubbed down with wet and dry then painted with silver smooth Hamerite.

Don't like the thought of spraying Hamerite as it would go everywhere unless you masked everything off.

Don't paint it on too thick and let it dry for 24 hours.

Read somewhere that someone had it done by the dealers under 3year manufacturers warranty.

Yep it is normal, material used by BMW is not stainless. On the newer model (Z4 etc) they are using stainless material. Its the same case with my E90. I bought 2 sets of paint (silver and red) for hubs and calipers. I will be painting this Monday. I have done it on my E46 and no problems after 2 years.

Exactly what you said John - but the beauty of hammerite is that it dries in a couple of hours

went the whole hog on mine...................

sprayed primer, let it dry. Then sprayed matching sapphire black. When dry, finished off with laquer.

Didnt bother masking. No need to. Spay close enough whilst rotating the disc. Any overspray gets "cleaned" off the discs by the pads leaving a perfect edge & the wheel hides any overspray on the centre face of the disc. Make sure you spray a good inch in on the center face as the 1st time I did it you could just see a band where I had missed.

Jet washes nice with the laquer on.

Did silver on the old discs but having changed them last year I went for the colour of the car. Dont suppose that would look right if your car was blue though.

Looks nice. Black rims on the disc, silver sprayed calipers & yellow ebc brakes.

With the calipers I masked up a bit & just gave the calipers about 10 light coats of silver. Sill look new 6 months later.

Anything from Halfords will do Matt, it's not as though you are using it big-time. No need to spend any more than about £30 or so.

Erm...surely that contaminates your pads somewhat?

Also, are you talking about spraying an inch in on the hub-face? I'd be very wary of doing that. Unevenness on the face could lead to improperly mounting wheels and vibration/imbalance.

You might have to drive your car up onto a short length of 2x1 wood to gain enough clearance for the jack to slide in underneath the car.

No probs at all. Any contamination wouldnt be there long. The paint is a lot softer than the pads & is dry so all the pads are doing is scraping the paint away. Bit like when you wash the car & the disc go all rusty. The pads soon clean em up.

Not noticed any wobbles or vibrations of any kind.

I take it you can only get to the visible side of the brake caliper? Or do you remove the caliper and paint both sides of it?

Also, how are the yellow-stuff pads? Any good?

visible side - mainly yes but you can get good access when the wheel is off gave them a quick once over with a soft wire brush & spayed with some silver heat resistant paint.

Sprayed them just before I put the new yellows pads in so that the old pads took the overspay & new yellows went in clean. Be a pain in the arse now to do it with yellow pads in as you would have to mask em or remove em.

in the ideal world you would take the calipers off but I didnt think it was worth the effort or time. Looks good enough for the effort inolved.

Yellow pads been very good although I hadn't had my car that long to really compare them before I put new discs & pads on all round. Could have got another 10k out of the old ones I suspect but I just wanted to get the car into A1 condition as it is an 80K car.

The pads when 1st put in are very very grippy. They seem to have a thin rubber finish on the pad that really bites. Never "broke" them in as suggested & they are absolutely fine & no squeals at all. Would buy some more but to be honest I'm not that hard on my brakes so couldnt talk about fade etc. Dust seem very good though. Discs are wearing very evenly across the face of the disc & no lip has started yet on the edge of the disc. Should last me years at my current annual milage.

I am painting my hubs and calipers tomorrow morning
Silver hubs and red calipers
I am using some spray to get the dust off first and then sand paper
Its a hard job haha
