M3 V8 reg 1st Jan,run in service at 1186 miles, so what its like

First the BAD POINTS

As with any decent car its a nightmare to park these things anywhere,what is it about jealousy

They are taking a big hit with the residuals at the mo to be honest no 3 series will to any market be worth nearly £60k !!!

The Fuel consumption is a 250mile range tank or 17/18mpg which is crap and bloody EXSPENSIVE

The inner wings,under bonnet/boot areas are painted in Fecking primer which is rubbish on a car costing this much

The front air dam thing looks like a fishes gob,M sport looks better ...

The 19" wheels look pants,for £1200 you would have thought they would have come up with something a little different


The GOOD points

What a CAR,i am a BM fan have tried others but have always ended back withthey just suit me

Test drove a new 911C4s as i always wanted one,not worth the extra £10k no way never.image yes drive NO

The engine is an absolute masterpiece i had the e46m and loved the 6cyl in that but this thing is something else the way it pulls and pulls and then reaches 7k and pulls some more is Awsome a V8 at 8k in 3rd gear is something to be heard


I love the shape from the side i love the E92 shape anyway but with the extra bulges etc which are all very coherant makes it one of the nicest looking things out there.

EDC,absolutely brilliant,the main reason i sold the E46m was that on the rare occasion that i had to travel a far distance for work it was just TOO much of a hardcore driving exsperience,with EDC if your not in the mood press it into comfort sit back stick it in 4th and relax


If you want to play or have some loon sat up your arse press the M Mode button on the steering wheel the car instantly comes alive the throttle tightens up the suspension starts to hug the road and the loon disapears

Apparently this car is Sic,bad and wicked according to the local teenage Mafiosa


Faults - NONE


All in all for me and my circumstances the best car i've owned,it would not be practical as an everyday car as it would be just too expensive on the GOGO juice,but i have the Vito for that

Next car if i ever get me divorce settled an AMV8 (dreaming) an M3 V8 DCT or an X6

Interesting read and good to get a view of +/- not just a biased 1 sided opinion.

A speced M3 costing nearly £60k agreed is a lot of money and it should be £10k less and I guess that is what the market thinks as well. I guess glasses etc look at a 320i/d M sport specced with 19's and leather costing half the amount and almost looks the same and it looks silly price. (not comparing the 2 cars). 911 although in reality not worth 10k more but,the more you drive one the more it gets under your skin imo and for a lot of buyers of these cars 10k is not really relevant and will be equalised come resale and residual/feel good factor.

19" Rims I think look really good on the car understated, stylish and classically and easily idetifyable as M3 alloys moving nicely from the E36, E46 heritage.

Fuel consumption is pants and although a relatively minor cost compared to depreciation but perception of mpg is a easy to see cost indicator and anyway as you say not your everday motor so not important.

Next cars M3 DCT - you will bore of the box and it will cost you atleast 10k to swap so a waste of money. AMV8 sounds fun but an expensive toy and the X6 I just don't get it and I reakon if you brought you would flog fairly quickly.

I reakon either keep the M3 or a 911 variant as they will face lift the 997 this sept/oct for 09 cars and they will come fighting back with tweaks and more power or the AMV8.

You mention jealousy, you haven't had some scumbag scratch or damage it have you?

Know exactly what you mean about residuals - had a quick look on some sites the other day and was a tad surprised TBH, predominately the bigger engined 3 series, diesels included.

Personally like the front end but hey.

Oh yes the engine - have heard one running in an enclosed enviroment and heard one pass by as it were - nice

Unfortunately missed my chance to have a drive in a demo. 'cos the bloody dealer sold it But I may meet this very nice man at some point in the near future who has a M3. Wonder who that could be

I drove a demo car and it was awesome!! Like you said, a V8 at full song just sounds so so awesome! I absolutely loved it - the only engine I have heard that matches it was the M5 touring I drove the week after!!

Nice write up.

I did say before when I test drove one that it was so much easier to live with than the six cylinder M3 that we had and was so civilised it could be used as an everyday car. However I didn't have to fill it up with the juice and I only managed about 13mpg on my bit of Saturday afternoon madness.

SqueezeBM sounds like you should have waited for the Automatic DCT version as it would have been similar to the E46 M3 and you wouldn't have needed to change so soon

as for economy, it could be that you would have benifited for say purchasing an E92 335D. these are highly economical, have good residuals and go like stink! not quite as fast as the M3 but quick enough for a hard charging pace across country

on track at Cadwell on Good Friday i managed to get my average down to 11.5 MPG. My Z4 3.0 on track manages about 7 MPG so god knows what the M/// would do

Nice writeup squeeze, I'm still patiently waiting for my 4 Door M3 to appear probably in may

The dealer had a launch 4 door in and I went for a test drive in it last week, orginally I test drove a red coupe back in november with 2200 miles on it, the saloon had 600 miles. I'm pretty sure the car loosens up so you might find things are still going to get better.

I was really impressed with the 4 Door M3 in the flesh, looks like a mini M5

The fuel thing is a worry, I'm planning on keeping mine for 4 years and doing 50-60k I'm coming from a 530D where I was getting 30mpg and hope it might creep up to 20mpg in the M£

Still, if you work out 60k miles £5/gallon at 30mpg = £10,000 or 60k miles at 20mpg = £15,000 then the cost is really only £1500 extra a year for the pleasure of driving a M3, I think the hassle of filling up twice a week will be worse.
