1M downpipes - free flowing downpipes ? Dealer-invisible Stage 2 tune ?
Hi,
Just crossed my mind this: GIAC stated that the 1M Stage 2 maps can be used with stock 1M downpipes. When I asked how is this possible (knowing that Stage 2 maps need catless downpipes), they said that the 1M downpipes are more free-flowing compared to the usual N54 downpipes. Question is, how much more free-flowing ? Do they have metallic cats, to withstand track abuse, maybe ? In Europe a set of these cost about 980EUR ex. VAT. They don't seem to have a price listed at Tischer BMW, but the price is similar to some other aftermarket catted downpipes solutions, and lower than than catted downpipes with HJS cats. Just an idea...for those who want dealer invisibility and a Stage 2 tune, and also for those who don't like the strong smell with catless downpipes, or for those who care about pollution Part numbers are: 18307980403 18307980404

IIRC Cobb says the 1M DPs will work their stage 2 and stage 2+ tunes. However, any catless DP will be cheaper and make more power.
But if you live in an emissions testing area they'll work. |

Pretty neat if it's a direct swap -- Does anyone know if the 1M has it's "own" manual transmission?? Just wondering if it's an upgraded 335 trans or something purpose built.

Would this apply to the 335is as well? Don't they share the same style of free flowing downpipes (just asking)?
Thanks in advance.

I just took a look at realoem.com, the same part number for the 335iS stock DPs is the same for the 335i 2008-2010 N54 cars
Before 2008 the N54 stock DPs had a difference part number The 1M N54 Stock DP do not share the same part # 18307980403 18307980404 |

In terms of the 1M downpipes, we haven't looked extensively into the differences. They are a different part number than x35i downpipes, though. In our testing, the WGDC was lower with these downpipes over their N54 counterparts. For this reason, and the fact that many 1M owners wish to maintain a stock-like appearance, we do offer a Stage 2 1M file for those with an upgraded intercooler, but stock downpipes.
This is not to say that the 1M downpipes are ideal, as we certainly do see more gains with upgraded ones (catted or catless). Our testing simply indicates that they do flow slightly better than other N54 versions, but like I said we haven't looked into it any deeper than that. |

You will get a Check Engine Light (when you uninstall the tune to go to the dealership).

If we have some free time (thing are extremely busy this time of year), we will certainly delve deeper into this. A software package utilizing the 1M downpipes could certainly have value for those looking to pass emissions.

Nothing ever comes of anything with GIAC. I think they are pretty much done with this platform. They said something about a higher boost stage 2 map testing like two years ago and nothing ever came of that either.
