What is a Daten?

Hi.
Ok, I get that "Daten" / "Data" files are some sort of config file set related to the coding process... but what exactly is it and how do I know which one I need and have?

I tried a quick search but "daten" just brought up everyone's request for a particular numbered daten file set.

Still trying to get my cable working, and wondering if this is part of the problem.

Thanks!

Simply put the name is generic and refers to 'versions' of all sorts of ECU software.

Think of it of software update for your car.

A practical example would be.

- You code your car which has v46.3 daten i.e. code xenon retrofit
- Vehicle for some reason goes to dealer and gets software update to v48.1
- You now need v48.1 to code your car

It also impacts upon programming aswell.

Okeydoke - sounds "Sensible" enough! I guess I thought there was more to it, thanks! So you basically just need a daten same or newer (higher number) than the version of your car?

I have heard of some looking to down-grade their daten's because of a dealer flash which locked them out of one or more features. Am I understanding this correctly - can you down-grade a daten? Presumably you lose settings if you do, I guess?

And as I can't get the cable to work yet, this may answer itself later - how do I know which daten I have/need?

You wouldn't necessarily have to downgrade it depends on what your ultimate goal is. I have 0 experience with downgrading. Up to date files are often released online. I have never found it necessary to downgrade.

As far as i asked my cousin its not possible to downgrade, and if your car got locked daten in it just go or write to someon who can unlock it or reflash with open flash files

Sounds good, thanks guys!
I'm not locked, just trying to understand the Daten bits. I am still trying to get my cable to even talk to my car... still no luck. Thought that might be part of it, but now I think not.

Update for this thread: I was shipped a replacement cable from the same company who gave me the original one, except I received a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CABLE... which worked first try. Fyi.
