1 Gen Nano with 2009 3series idrive

I have several ipods, I tested touch with the system, and it worked great. But if I plug my 1st gen nano in, sometimes it worked, sometime it doesn't. It looks like that if I plug the nano in the first time, it works, and then I turn off the car, leave for a couple of hours, and then start the car again, it shows no device connected. So, I have to keep trying to unplug/plug in again for several times, and it will work again. I read from somewhere that for older models of ipod, i have to use the usb cable came with ipod, and it behaves the same.

Any ideas? I don't want to leave my touch in the car, so, nano will be a better fit for me since I don't use it for other purpose.
