N55 XI Oil Cooler in Canada
Hey Guys,
The situation is that I am heading to track in a week (first time in this car and overall) and my friend recently brought up the issue of my car not having an oil cooler. I knew this a year ago after I purchased the car however it didn't cross my mind as an issue until now. I have a 2011 e92 335i with Xdrive and Msport. I looked into this more and found these threads: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=505632 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=535581 This confirms that the N55 XI in Canada has no factory oil cooler installed unless you have did some kind of special order when purchasing the car to add the hot weather climate package (or something along the lines of that) which includes the factory oil cooler. It seems as though US N55 XI's have factory oil coolers. I don't plan to go extremely hard at track but I do want to last more than just 2-3 laps before having to cool off lol (one lap is around 3km) So my questions are: 1. Any Canadians out there who tracked their N55 XI's? Any issues with oil temps? 2. Would I able able to install an aftermarket oil cooler such as: http://www.evolutionracewerks.com/node/132 --> It seems as though if my car doesn't come with a factor oil cooler than the oil filter housing will have no ports for an oil cooler very similar to what is seen at the bottom of the page explaining how the earliest N54's had no ports because no factory oil coolers. Any general advice and input is welcome as well. Thanks! -------------------- TL;DR My car has no factory oil cooler, going to track in a week, what are my options? Need advice and input.

Hi,
I bought the BMW PPK march 8 2012 at the dealer. I don't have the oil cooler. Before selling the PPK to me, the dealer tell me and ask to me if I will track the car and to not track the car... I don't know more, but you can buy the oil cooler at the dealer with PPK stage 2. I don't track my car but drive sometimes agressivly and I have no problem... |

If you have the mspprt package on an e92, Im pretty sure you have it.
Look in frontthe front passenger wheel, you should see a small radiator which is the oil cooler. If you dont have it, dont worry if the car ever does overheat limp mode will prevent any engine damage. |

That's retarded....why would BMW do this? I have the M-Sport Package with the 5 star looking 18' wheels. So mind doesn't have it as well? Why would they do that? So we buy the PPK stage 2 from them?

You can check by looking behind the bumper infront of the passenger side front wheel to see if you can see a vent and radiator. Also, your oil filter housing will not have ports on it with hoses attached leading down to the passenger side of the car.

Yes that is! You have a N55 single turbo engine right? I'm so confused now. Do X drive sedans get oil coolers?

I was told it was Msports with 18" that also got teh oil cooler. I have the Msport with 17" wheels and no oil cooler. My oil temp was at 240F under normal driving today, at 50F and raining.

Do you have an oil cooler? Also, driving straight line fast on highways isn't the same as track I've done many straight line pulls on the highway but never once have my temperatures increased to 140+ and hit limp mode like it did on track

Went to the track last week and my car went into limp mode at the last session right before the cooldown lap. No tune, which is why I didn't hit limp mode until the very end.
If you have a tune, definitely get oil cooler for tracking. I heard N54 people using water wetter to indirectly lower the oil temperature.. I wonder if this is true? There was a 335i N54 and he was constantly pitting presumably because of limp mode lol |

Probably because almost all US cars with sport/M-sport have oil coolers and they are the ones primarily tracking the car. For normal conditions, the car is fine although the temp is a little high for my liking. (I reach 130C in hot weather and AC on)
