BMW Stopped Production?

I heard that along with other manufacturers, BMW have suspended or ramped down production due to lack of parts resulting from the Japan earthquake. Anyone got any more details?

There worried about radioactive turbo's and the added torque having a detrimental affect on earths gravity.

Mapped 335D's have already caused catastrophe over on PH!

Still waiting. It's not due until end of May anyway but I read something somewhere and now I can't find it.

One of my buddies (who owns a lease brokerage firm) has told me that a lot of the manufacturers have shut downs planned (Ford for one).

Natural assumption is for people to think about Japanese manufacturers only being affected, but the fact is if your German manufactured/assembled car uses an ECU produced in Japan your German plant is equally affected.

Qutoe from autotrader

http://www.autotrader.com/research/a...oes-shared.jsp

"While European automakers haven’t seen a major impact from the quake, some have been affected. BMW halted all exports to Japan due to supply chain disruptions; Volkswagen announced it could face production delays; and Jaguar had to slow production of its XF sedan because of a lack of Japanese-made LCD screens for its infotainment system. Hardest hit was Volvo, whose commercial trucks division was forced to temporarily cease Japanese production following the disaster"

Seems alot of the info is dated from mid march and not much since.

Being selfish good luck and hopefully no delays...

A mate of mine works at Land Rover and they stopped the RR track because of lack of infotainment screens.

One of our customers (Toyota owned) is taking extra days off at the end of the month because of supply problems from Japan they are also only producing for 3 days per week through may.

Good job it wasn't China the quake hit, or we'd all be stuffed.

I'm sure Thailand would take up the slack.

Apparently Japan supplies the majority of car manufacturers with Air Mass Meters. Bear a thought for the general semiconductor market - apparently 80% of the worlds resin for sealing IC's comes from Mitsubishi Chemicals 2 plants in Japan, neither of which are currently manufacturing. Sharp, worlds largest supply of LCD screens has halted manufacturing - I'm sure that we'll see a lot of knock on effects from this disaster

Being a geek... Screen grab? I have seen a couple from the US section of owners waiting. Is it the same for the UK customers? You get to follow the progress of the build?

Not that I know of. It would be really nice if you could but I think it's a US dealer-facilty that they publish on their web portal. As far as I know BMW UK do not make this data available. I just had a call from the dealer saying his order status had changed to "in build".

Not really - I fully realise that a delay in a new car pales into HUGE insignificance when one considers the devestation and loss that people have gone through. I was just discussing the knock-on effect without wanting to diminish the tradgedy in any way.
