But it works! My battery finally took a dump after almost 8 yrs. INot bad right? I could not open my trunk but after removing/pulled key from keyfob I was able to open trunk manually (it took me a while to open it since its the first time I use this process). I m glad there is this option.

I have to mention that it probably died only because I have been parking outside my garage for the last week or so, since we have painted the floor and we are letting it dry before we can park inside the garage again. Tempeture outside at night has been in the low 50's so there you have it . I wonder is my battery would still be working if I would have parked inside garage all this time. Anyways its time to replace it after almost 8 yrs.

I have been pretty lucky for the last 2 yrs that had low battery warnings and got away with it. Well till yesterday tried to start my car and nothing! I had to jump started with wifes SUV. I will go to dealership today to get the exact one part # 6121 69 46332 white color. ($142.00 Special price) I will install it tonight. No need to register it since its same battery specs. I will post again tomorrow with updates. Great DIY by the way. I also have the old black power box so this is the exact tutorial to follow. Cheers fot that!

Update: Replaced my battery succesfully last night. It took me about 30 min from starting to finish. On my particular battery, no registration is needed according to BMW service guys. Car feels great and my power issues are gone. I tested "REST" function and is working again along with rear defroster, blower fan for AC does not switch speeds like it used to either. All these thanks to the new battery. Hope this helps!

Easy thanks to the DIY and videos I found here. Total cost parts and my labor $146.00 Cheers guys!

Replace and Register battery for BMW E90.

There has not a single symbol of a weak battery on the 2008 328I, built Nov 2007: It just failed to start in a normal morning after a little over 5 year service.
The battery is a white OEM, 90AH, 160RC, 720CCA. The deal asks $205for the battery and 189for installation and register (Houston area). Cost asides, a DIYer should not be daunted by a few technical terms, AKA, battery register. Here we go:
The battery choices:
The OEM battery is secured by a long bolt with a clamp pressing the bottom edge of the battery as circled in the right side of the picture. When you take out the battery, you will see a series of sockets at interval of every 1.5” for the bolt. Therefor dimension wise the longest battery fits this car is about 14”(H8), the second largest is 12” 7/16 (H7), etc. Also it is a must to have vent on ONE side vented outside to the L shaped hose (circled on the front side of the vehicle). You have to plug the other vent on the battery if it comes with holes on both ends. Here are a few possible replacements:
1. From Dealer OEM
2. Advance Auto website insists 9RH7 is the right size, which is 1.5” shorter than size H8. both conventional and AGM come with RC140.
3. Autozone website says the H8 is the right size, the AGM type comes with RC170.
4. Walmart MAXX H8 conventional is rated RC150.

Considering the battery is trunk mounted an AGM battery is a better choice. I would also consider H7 size which is the second longest battery for easy in and out of the battery tray. However this time I have no time/experience to code a new battery so I pick the Walmart Johnson controls battery that is cheapest and most close to OEM AH.
Battery Register with free software available from smooth1 in this forum. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=727091
With the computer connected to the vehicle’s ODB port, Key in the slot, apply no brake and press to turn on the car. Under the ‘special’ menu, select ‘register battery’, you will be confirmed by something like ‘ battery register was successful…’. This easy step is for reset your computer for a new battery at same spec, e.g., an OEM or a generic with similar spec.
Of course you need this $30 cable, shipped from Honkong from ebay (search BMW INPA K+DCAN D-CAN CAN INPA Ediabas USB Interface). The software installation is daunting task but following instruction is all you need to do. On the other hand, I believe you don’t need to use the software it comes with, all you need is the COM-USB simulator driver for Smooths ‘s software to work.
In terms of register the battery or leave it alone, I drove the car for 2weeks w/o register. Only thing I noticed (maybe in my mind only) is the blue tooth does not work smoothly. After register things appear back to normal. My next battery will be an AGM, I hope by then I should have be able to code the battery spec in.

Thanks for a great DIY. Did this last weekend and took me no more than 20-30 mins.

Just get that thing registered, the function is there in the tools for a reason.

2007 e90 with white battery. Car consistently starts up fine, nice and quick, but if I listen to the radio with the engine off, the car gives me a low battery warning. I did hook up a charger (to the front charging terminals) and did a slow 2A charge overnight but the error came back again soon after that.

I do mostly short trip driving. Does my battery really need replacing? Like I said, the starting is totally fine so far.

Probably you need to replace your battery. Is it original from new?

Change the battery! I just changed on my car after having the exact same scenario happen to me. The car starts as normal every time but indicates that battery is low every ones in a while and stops some functions such as radio (engine off) and welcome lights. After I changed battery this has not happened.

I haven't changed it since it went off of covered maintenance, but am not sure if it was ever changed under previous owner or under warranty/maintenance.

Look at the production date, they are always shown on battery.

OP, thanks for the DIY. Battery went out last week on my '06 325i - eye was black. After much reading, decided to get the OEM lead acid battery with the same specs. Luckily a local dealer had it at a fair price. I registered it myself with the Ediabas/bin Tools32. (I read if it has the same specs it doesn't need to be coded). All good now.

Guys, I should clarify. I used Tools32 to register the battery because I was having problems trying it with INPA. From what I've read you should use INPA if you can because Tools32 can be dangerous if you're not careful. cheers

Thanks for the info.

2006 328i Sedan.

ended up just unbolting everything and disconnecting the harnesses which made it easier to get the battery in and out. Replaced it using a interstate white bottom w/ green top 94R. it started right up. now off to the local performance shop to get it registered.

I just changed the battery on my 2007 Z4 3.0si (should have the same system as a 330i of the same vintage). I don't think I need to register the battery on this model, but now the climate controls don't function and I think I've put it in transit mode.

I've never used INPA. Would anyone here have a link to a complete idiot's guide to resetting transit mode (i.e. where do I get the necessary cable and software, what actions to take and cautions to follow)?

Thanks a bunch.

quick question, about to replace the battery, was just wondering if I would need to re-code some of the custom settings I had, like amber corner light delete, etc.. Sorry if this has been posted already.

No

Total loss of battery power has no effect on modules or their contents/programming
