e89 z4
its been a while since this topic was brought up and the last time we talked about it, the thread didnt go very far due to pricing issues.
was wondering what people think of it now that you may or may not have seen/driven/know someone who bought one? Hows the double clutch? |

Drove one today, no overly impressed. Felt like it had 3/4 the pull of my 135i and the exhaust burble when changing up or down gears just doesn't sound normal. Because it changes gear so quick it sounds like the engine is misfiring. Hard to explain but in a manual change you get wwwwweeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrr------nnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrr but with the DCT you get wwwwweeeeeerrrrrrrBURBLEwwwwwwweeeeeerrrrrrr, anyway if I could do a voice over it would make more sense. It does change gears fast and smooth but you have to have it in sports+ to get a similar throttle response to the 135i. Overall it feels heavy, not as edgy as the 135i, the transmission is way better than steptronic but the care makes hored noises. I have driven a DCT M3 and exhaust note on up and down changes is just sublime.

I was going to buy one, had it all spec'd up and everything... Sdrive23, MT, Black on Black, 19" V-spoke alloys & so on.
Then I drove one... (Sdrive30 in AT, as there is not a single MT demo in NSW) The thing is a freaking boat, the e85 was a much better driving car. After driving the Boxster the e89 isn't even worth mentioning at all, it's really that simple. Don't get me wrong i like the e89 styling & interior, but the handling sucks royally, honestly it just wasn't any fun to drive at all.

It is an absolute shame that BMW decided to make the Z4 compete against the Merc SLK and not a Porsche Boxter. The comfort cruising roadster idea is not something that should be connected to BMW as a brand. I still can't believe they have produced this, it really has shocked me. All reviews have stated it has lost its hardcore dna and has gone for the soft cruising style of drive. Hope this isn't a sign of BMW's future direction.

It's disappointing as a BMW die-hard, but as a driving enthusiast it makes the decision easy = Boxster, nothing else in the class gets close.

Oh it gets better, the base model (sdrive23) is 110k on the road, with just enough options to be comfortable with & EPP.

It's 115k for the 30 with the same options... still doesn't change the result = FAIL.
