M3 needs a rest, so ordered a 335d as back-up - thoughts

-

OK, so is there too much of a good thing? We picked up our M3 in June; just got it back 2 weeks ago (another post goes into the saga).

In 10 days I racked up another 1300 miles (=2,600) on the M3 E92. I love it but it's crazy to do that many miles in an M, and mostly hwy commute. We have lived in Germany and driven TDiesels and like them a great deal.

So, decided to order a 335d as a back-up commuter car.

Specs:
Space / Chestnut / Aluminium
Sports pack / Paddles
Comfort access
iPod
Satellite / HD
Folding rear seats
Anti-theft
~ %51k

Getting a decent trade on a 540iT + some $k off.

I decided I wanted to save some money, after dropping $70K on an M in the same year, so I didn't order the other expensive options: Nav / Premium. Of course I have all that on the M3.

Any thoughts that I am making a big mistake re specs? I suppose some will say the nav (re-sale) but after having had a nav system go out on a 540i w/ 69k on it - cost $3,200+ (!) I'm kinda burned on having too much tech. And the diesel should be good for 200k+.

Anyone seen this colour combo?

I worked out that by sharing these cars my avg mileage should come in at ~ 27 mpg (a lot better than 17!) And I can keep more miles for fun drives in the M3.

Whew, did not want to drop $125k on new cars this year but I guess we do choose to live in the country.

Cheers,

-- V

ps no testers in Austin so have had to buy undriven.

Nice color combo

I ordered Space/Chestnut/Aluminum, too. There's a picture on here somewhere, search for Chestnut and you'll probably find it. I didn't have iDrive on my 335i, so I got that this time. When do you expect delivery?

if the 335d is going to be your main car (for commute), maybe you need the navigation system?

I would never want a BMW with vinyl seats or without bluetooth, so I must have the premium package

Sounds like a solid idea. Just buy a Garmin and save yourself the trouble.

I personally haven't driven the 335d, although I've heard it's fantastic. I have however spent extended hours in a E320 CDI, and will tell you that diesel is amazing to drive. It's no M3, but it's one hell of an experience.

Great. I'm still going to- and fro- on the iDrive ...

Build is week 44 I think; early Dec delivery.

My commute is literally near 40 miles down an Interstate and then turn off to the middle of downtown.

Rather than the nav, I'm still wondering about missing the other functionality I enjoy of the iDrive in the M3.

Whats so wrong with driving the M to and from? You bought the car to drive it....why not drive it...?

Good to see at least one local resident supporting BMW of Austin. I would personally never purchase a car from that place. Good service but very poor deals on actually buying the car.

Don't think that 90% interstate driving - near 80 miles / day - is a good use of the M3's talents. Massive depreciation to little purpose in terms of its being a focused driving tool. Better to save miles for country drives and some track. I do plan to drive it in to work 2x / week.

BTW, currently driving a 540iT for the commute but the nav needed replacing (affects radio & one needs the radio / stereo on an hour's commute) and $3,200+ repair bill does not seem a good investment to me.

Ironic, that's what I have heard but so far my experience has been diametrical: had an OK deal (on M3; close to invoice on ED + 7% off) and my 1st service experience was the worst ever! 10 days w/ car in shop and I'm having to call *them* to follow up; and car not ready (the 540iT) when we went in to talk about the 335d and all it needed was State Safety - after we said we would not spend over $3k on radio / nav (maybe 35% of Blue Book) - it was *still* not ready. What's more, they still have not followed up w/ me about why my M3's iDrive won't sync my iPhone's contacts. Not a good start.

- I don't see the Assist in that option list... you should get the Premium as you already got the leather.

- HD is standard in MY2010

- You should consider adding the Logic7 system as the standard audio in MY2010 is the 6-speaker used-to-be-only-in-Europe basic Stereo system. If you are getting the iPod and Sirius then 15W per channel and 6-speakers will not cut it. There's no more the HiFi 10-speaker system standard in the 3-Series (it is still standard in the M3, though).

- Get the iDrive... is this is a conmuter car then you need the Traffic reports, the full iPod and Bluetooth display at eye level. Get the Convenience Plan with the Assist and then you will have real time gas station prices and weather displays.

Don't be shy, indulge yourself.

Thx for your response.

Another $1,200 for stuff I don't need on this car, seats are $1,450 stand-alone.

Yep, but this is weird: the 335d is still on MY09 cycle so HD is an option! Bit annoyed by that, actually, as was std on the M3.

I have found w/ the M3 that these 'advantages' are not evident. Don't get good traffic data on my particular route and also not the gas prices. The one thing I will miss is Bluetooth. But I may still opt for the iDrive ... most on the fence on this.

Buying an M3 + ED trip to Germany / France AND a 335d in 6 months is not?

Assist is only $750 individually...

Something is wrong... the MY2010 ordering guide is out and the 335d is there as starting production this month (09/09). That's $350...

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...6&postcount=68

It was standard in the 2009 M3 because being part of the iDrive.

You have to pay for the gas prices display, and if you are paying and don't get it then the Convenience Plan in your area is definitely not worth it.

Closed the deal.

I decided that ordering Bluetooth + Leather and not Premium did not make sense.

So pretty much as at top + Premium. Will be interesting to contrast the M3's hi-rev power w/ the 335d's immense torque.

A follow-up comparo is in order: stupendous revs vs stupendous torque. Very contrasting driving experiences despite common origins. But, there's room for multiple models of driving pleasure.
