Angry i think i just blew my tranny...

Driving back home today, it was raining and very slippery on the road. I balanced out and proceeded to gas the car and as I grabbed second, a loud pop sound came from my tranny... curious on what it was, i immediately pulled into a parking lot and turned the car off. It sounds similar to a grinding/ clunking noise from my transmission area and my buddy told me I could've broke my syncro or just a simple bearing blowout. Ill throw a video sound clip of it when I have the chance but for now, do you guys know what this could be??? When I release the clutch, the noise comes in and when I press the clutch, it slowly disappears. I had to drive the car from the tow truck to my drive way and as I was, it felt like I was snapping something. I never let go of the clutch completely balancing out because I didn't want to hear the noise anymore and even out of gear, it makes the loud noise as soon as I release the clutch. The car jerks a little and feels like there's a rock inside of the gear box. But, in honesty, when I was grabbing second, I lost traction in first which is why I proceeded to second gear. As soon as I hit second, it shot back out and made the noise. I'm planning on doing a full rebuild of the tranny but do you guys have any ideas on what this could be?
P.S.Don't post if you guys are just gonna bash. So what if I floored it, everyone does from time to time.

UPDATE: The rattling only shows up on first and second gear, the worst is second !

Could be something simple like a throw out bearing or transmission mount. Could be something serious internally. Does it do it if you take off in second gear?

Gearbox specialist is the place to go obviously. But yes, maybe something as simple as a gearbox mount, but listening what you are saying it does sound like something a bit more serious, maybe the dual mass flywheel has broken apart, or maybe the friction material on the clutch has cracked or broken off - it is held in place by rivets...

Please keep us updated!

Sounds like typical torsion spring that popped out from its seating and rattling around the trans bell housing. Youll need a complete clutch/pressure plate/tb bearing kit. This happens all the time from speed/power shifting abuse from watching to many option2/initial D videos. Kids tend to mimic racers on video ..esp the little heel toe picture in picture at the left corner of those japanese best motoring videos.

Yep, I cringe when hearing tyres chirp on gear changes! That's a lot of shock energy that is bound to brake something!!!

lol i know right, but when I was young hearing the tires chirp 1st/2nd/3rd i felt so manly showing off to my racer/break dancing homies...watching those telephone poles fly by soo fast and i get to say...I used to get 4th gear chirps on a ACT clutch on my VTEC prelude , but now the kids are doing so on the canyons as they fall off the cliff at a alarming rate.

LOL, but with FWD's that is a bit easier and also a bit less punishing - RWD's with plenty of traction this is a different story, and of course even worse with an AWD. Clutch and drivetrain suffers badly from full-bore launches and rough power gear changes!

Lol I did say no bashing but hey you actually threw your two cents in it so ill accept it. I didn't do a hardshift when I grabbed second, I did it normally almost like a granny shift. It was raining so there was no reason for me to act a fool but I did use to do it a lot when I was younger and when I first had my car. Any idea how much the kit would cost?

I can't deny I've done this quite a few times after getting my cdv installed but it didn't seem reasonable last night.

Will do! Thanks for your input, I thought of the same thing this morning. But my car was still able to drive up the driveway when I balanced out no problem but I didn't release the clutch all the way

I have not tried it in second gear, the sound comes out even in neutral as I let go up the clutch. Are you guessing I blew my first gear?

No, I was asking to narrow down if you did mess up a syncro or gearing. Since it does it in neutral I doubt it's something in the transmission. I would get the flywheel, clutch/its parts looked at.

There's your problem...

Granny shifting, not double clutching like you should....

I'm surprised you didn't blow the welds on the intake

Ohh I see, what would the problem be if it was the syncro? My friend said it could be the throw out bearing possibly also

A clutch kit for your car would run about 350-500 for an oem replacement. This damage is normally accumulated over time of abuse and not necessarily from one instant. The car is still drivable long as you know how to rev match gear to gear (drive to a shop to avoid towing charges).

I can't say I wasn't expecting that one lmao!

Syncro can be difficult getting into gear, grinding and some times having issues with it kicking the car out of gear.

Believe it or not chirping tires is better then actually hooking the next gear. Drivetrain shock is the most abusive nature in shifting. Chirping or spinning tire transfers less load to the drivetrain. But any power shifting can be abusive at the end of the day.

I know many guys making big power on FWD cars, they actually use a tire that is not adequate power in hopes of spinning tire on power shifts as opposed to hooking, and sending all that energy through the drivetrain.

TO the thread starter:

Can be many things...

Does it make a noise engaging all gears, or only 1 gear.
Does the noise only come when you press the clutch pedal or after the gear is engaged.
Is there any resistance shifting into any of the gears more then usual.

Answering some of these questions might help to narrow down a potential problem.

That actually is really good and ill be willing to pay it because its about 1000% less than bmw (no exaggerations) I replaced my clutch once and it ran be 4k... thanks to the stealership and ill definitely try to drive the car but not as far as the tranny shop is. The shop is about 1 mile away (if even) but I have to go thru a series of busy twisted small streets and stop and go traffic

When I busted it yesterday, I kept trying to throw it into second gear but it kept shooting me out

I haven't tried all gears but yes it does in first and second, it shot out of second twice when I tried to throw it in. The noise actually goes away when I press the pedal and returns when I lift off. There's a slightly stronger resistance than before but the gears still go in

That says it all right there, when its applied the clutch is disengaged which is why you dont hear anything cause power train is disconnected. Once you release the pedal you now have uneven clamping forces on the disc with missing/broken springs which is the metallic clinging noises you hear. Any competent trans shop should be able to replace a clutch for about 300-600 labor.

This is where I'm also leaning as well. Id start there. You'll know real quick if it isnt the clutch and you'll already be in the right area to see the non internal trans parts.

Wait... so something might not be broken but rather the DT is just disconnected? O.O
