Updating car's CAS software?

I'm just now having the steering lock issue with my car. I'm gathering from my research that the dealer does an update to the car's CAS, and if it still fails, a new steering column is in order.

Is the CAS something I can update myself? How do I go about finding what i have and what is current?
I've coded stuff before, I have an '06 E90.

Thoughts anyone?

You can do it by yourself. Winkfp will do it. CAS should be updating when ignition is OFF and key is out.

Using the OBD K+DCAN interface how long did the CAS take?
I don't have a MOST interface unfortunately.

Thanks for the replies.

Seems to be a bit over my head. Do I have any options over bringing it to the dealer? Can it be done remotely?

Yes it can be done remotely, but you need to have at least K-CAN cable for your car working with EDIABAS.

How is this done??? If ignition is off how does one update the module other then a bench setup? I would think not.

Yes, the CAS (Car access system) is the only module which must be programmed when ignition if OFF. I'm not saying that you should just connect your cable and that's all, you should first turn the ignition ON when cable is plugged in and then turn OFF and take out the key from the slot. Now you should programm CAS using WINKFP.

WinKfp doesn't inform you about this during this process, ISTA-P does. You can also code this module with ignition OFF.

Winkfp will not even be able to code the CAS without removing the key out of ignition. It timesout with a transmission error.

Take less than 5 mins for me to flash a CAS module, simple.

For the OP, I flashed an older car that had the steering wheel lock issue. The updated flash removes the steering lock check from the module and the error went away.

Do you use ISTA/P or WINKFP for updating?

I've got a 2006 330i as well. What is the daten version that has this update? Mine is updated to at least V32. Does it disable wheel lock, or just disable the check? My wheel still locks when I shut it off.

Yes it will probably resolve your ELV issue. You can update with daten 49. I will share it to you.

Wanted to ask if coding the cas is there any way to mess up the sync of the key fob after flashing? I understand you stick key in let the dme recognize the key fob. Pull it out and with ignition off, you flash. Is there any other issues?

No issue, you can pull the key out right before you click PROGRAM.
You don't need to do anything after flashing.

Well just to note that Winkfp does allow for you to go backwards in software version...All you have to do is check forced programming and it will flash through...I just flashed 2007 CTM softare to E93
