Question, for the front shocks, to take the bolt off on the top of the shock, what sized allen wrench fits in on the top?

That noise is more than likely coming from the headlight leveling system. There's one sensor connected to the front suspension and a second sensor attached to the rear suspension. This system monitors how much load is on the car and aims the headlights accordingly.
I forgot to reattach mine after finishing the job, and it sounded exactly like what you are describing.

How do you know when the struts need replacing? Mine make noise only when going over speed bumps and stuff. Is that a sign or could it be something else?

After reading other threads on here I think the issue my car is having is just the sway bar bushings making noise, since it only happens when it's been really cold.

FYI, I bought the same Pittsburg open ended wrench set and it did no have the right size socket. My front shocks had 21mm nuts on the end, and the pittsburg kit only went to 19mm I think..

Lucky for me, a friend had a Pittsburg open end wrench set he got pretty cheap from Harbor Freight. You combine that with another wrench and it will solve your problems.

Note, in the pictures below, you will see a Torx bit whereas it should really be an allen bit tip.

Hope that helped.

If i were to use this DIY for coilover install, I simply just take out the rear (as per DIY but using outside bolt on control arm), and for the front, will I also need to use a spring compressor to remove the front strut assembly?

wow these guys are outt of their minds charging $1000+ for install!?

All prices are out the door, including parts, labour, corner balancing, 4
wheel alignment, tax and supplies.

KW V2, $3340 ($1500 for parts)
PSS9, $3145 ($1600 for parts)
Sonic, $2175 ($1000 for parts)

Get the spring compressor. You can get the rears off without it, but the fronts were more difficult. I used the spring compressor to help get the strut out of the tower. Without the compressor it would have been a real pain.

Compressing the springs is the only PITA in this install. The rest is very easy.

Sorry to bring this thread up to the top but I might be getting ready for the kw v2 install if I can't find a reliable/affordable shop to mount them.

Some thoughts tho..

It looks like for the rears, with the tires still mounted, cant we just elevate the rears enough to get under the car and unbolt the strut from the arm. Once the strut is disconnected from the arm, the arm is free to drop. Then by lifting the rear slowly, gravity will drop the arm lower, enough to unseat the springs from the perch. Once free, take the springs out and replace with new ones. I've done this similar install on my cousins XB. It's a different car but it looks like the rear springs / strut is similar in layout.

I'm more concerned about the rear install than the fronts lol. Im familiar with using spring compressors so the fronts can't be any different than other cars.

Thoughts?

I just installed a KW sport suspension (struts up front and shocks only in rear) and I must say that putting the new front struts in was a pain in the a#*.

What I did on the fronts after having removed the old strut was insert the new strut first on top (3 screws) and then align the bottom and force it in. Needed 2 people for that and felt like I was really forcing things. Even with the spring compressed I felt like the strut was jsut too long. Maybe my spring compressor was crap...?

Regards,
L

*See My Update in the Post below*.

Tried doing this. Took me 10 HOURS. I wasn't installing lowering springs with this DIY. Was installing GC Camber Plates instead. 2 biggest pain point.

- Struct top nut and Allen key hole. I still can't get it torque all the way to 55ft-lb. Went to Home Depot and they don't even have anything like a protruding wrench with a hole in the middle. The front page of the DIY needs to highlight this!!! This is the biggest pain point!

- With the camber plates slightly thicker than what it's replacing stock, and the stock spring being much longer than the H&R ones, getting enough compression was a PAIN!. I grabbed at 4 coils on one side, including the top of the strut body (bottom coil of spring), and I still didn't get enough compression. I had to aggressively get 4 coils on both sides to get enough compression to remount the GC camber plate.

All in all it was much more difficult than the impression I got from the DIY.

I take everything back and have to say that this DIY is no good. Fiddling with spring compressors while the whole suspension is still attached, swinging the whole thing out from under the fender is just BAD!!!!! This sounds MUCH better and MUCH easier.
