Tach question

I thought the bar around the tach was suppose to move? As the car was cold the warning would move to a lower RPM. At least this is what I have seen on an M5. I have an '07 335 and did not see it move at all. Is this something that may not be active or?

Totally new to all this and tried to search but could not find any relevant posts.

The only "bar" that moves on 335s is on the speedo when you turn on the cruise control - there is nothing for the tach. In 328s and 325s (unsure about 330s) there is an instantaneous "mpg" gauge rather than the temperature one

Mine has never moved. Maybe that is exclusive to M cars.

Gotcha. I saw it on there and it looked like it could move. Guess it is something not active? Oh well lol thought it was cool on the M5, makes you think about getting on it before you actually do

yeah i've seen that on the 7 series. i thought i had it but we dont. its weird to tell when ur car is warm.

My car takes a long time to get to normal operating temp (when the temp needle finally stops climbing). And yet I'll be driving for like ten minutes and it still isn't fully 'warmed up'. It's annoying, because I want to know it's ok on the internals, but to wait until the needle stops moving before I go full throttle or even pull to 5K or something, I'm halfway to my destination already. On short trips, it never gets to temp. I really wish we had the moving gauge thing on the 335....

nope, 2010 e90 335d. Our engine runs HOTTT real hot. i'd like to have a temp gauge.

Weird - don't know why diesels wouldn't get one? How hot do you run?

VERY HOT! lol its the hottest engine i've ever had. its weird because the diesel doesnt warm up by idling. whenever you start it up, it always idles at 600 rpm.

Going back to the original question, that is indeed exclusive to the M's and 7 Series. Not sure about the F10 5er.

Not quite true that it's unique to the M's and 7. I had an E60 530i that the tach gauge-thingy moved on.
I'll double check on my 335 later today.

This feature worked in 2006 with the 330i but was disabled from then on.

For those who don't understand what he's talking about, it's the thing on the tach that's equivalent to the cruise control indicator on the speedo.

So the NA coupe has a water temp gauge? And is it so heavily buffered as to be virtually useless (except for warm-up) as was the case on the E46? Neither my 328i wagon nor my 128i 'vert has one but according to BMW, the N28i engine is sufficiently warmed up after 60 to 90 seconds of moderate running!

Yeah, according to my gauge, it takes like 10+ minutes to fully warm up. You'd think I had 5 massive oil coolers in there or something.

Hang on, can this be true? So the crucial parts are hot very fast, but...whats the temp gauge for then? What's it reading, if not oil temp?

I see what you are saying. What do you consider warm enough to redline?

I just assumed to wait until at or near normal operating temp, i.e. 230-240º.

I've always considered 180+ to be sufficient for operating temp and I just have at it. I could be wrong.
