Does my car need a new battery?

11' 323i

Ignition coils + spark Plugs were replaced 6 months ago.
No warning lights on dashboard.
Battery is probably more than 2 years old .

Problem: it takes longer to start when the engine is cold... "double cranking ".

Called the dealership, they want $242+tax +$150 for installation = $442.96

I do have Mycarly , so i can register the battery cheaper than $150.

I have read many people saying that u don't need OEM battery, that any $150 battery will do the job with no problems at all.

I am not very familiar with batteries , (AGM or not AGM ?) so I need some help trying to find the correct one.

Please let me know if anyone has replaced the oem battery with an aftermarket one. Brand , Model , specifications and Where to buy?

Looks like 90Ah, 720 cca lead acid to me. There's 3 or 4 different physical sizes of battery that fit. The hold down bolt has 3 or 4 holes for them.

It may be a good idea to have the battery checked, or check the voltage at the battery while cranking. It'd be a shame to replace the battery for these symptoms only to find it makes no difference, and the problem is really your starter.

When i say "cold start ", i mean in the morning or more than 4 hours after the car has not been driven.

My original battery (07 323) lasted 8 years. Then I replaced with an OEM AGM battery (using a forum discount at local dealer) and had it registered and coded (coding necessary if you change the battery type of specs).

When I searched 3rd party vendors for batteries, I found many didn't advertise the AH, just CCA. No matter which battery you get, just make sure it's got the right AH value, doesn't have to be an OEM battery.

I found the batteries at CT (and Walmart, lol) didn't have batteries with an AH high enough for the E9X.

If you're in GTA, here are the dealers that offer discounts that I'm aware of:

Maranello (free maxbimmer registration required)

Endras (free maxbimmer required)

Pfaff (BMW True North VIP registration required)

Discounts are 20% off parts. Have used it for my battery, key fob, and a few other parts ordered in the past.

I thought all the Bmw dealerships in ON would have the same prices but i was totally wrong.
Pfaff $240
Grand River $292.

Good to know about those discounts , thanks for the info. If i can get the battery for a fair price , i will go OEM for sure.

For reference, Maranello gave me the best price of all the dealers I listed above (prices include discount).... $195 for Lead Acid, $230 for AGM, both with 90AH (the highest OEM option available).

In that case, it's probably a bad battery.

The problem is here again...

Why haven't i replaced the battery? Because the problem disapeared for couple of weeks.

How ? im not sure, That Saturday i drove the car for around 250km and the problem just did not happen again for couple of weeks after that .

I am working from home and drive the car probably 10km a day in the city , but sometimes i don't even drive it at all for 1 or 2 days...

Am i not driving the car enough to recharge the battery?

I think that's it...
I remember reading on another thread that if the car is used for short commutes only, to go for a longer drive on the weekend so the battery can charge back up.

Try it and see if the problem returns.

Check to see if your car has had the battery cable recall performed.

Can go to crappy tire and get a small battery tender to charge battery every now and then.
I drive short trips in my 328 and it kills battery, especially in winter when seats and blower is on. Had to replace mine a couple years ago.
Go with agm type and code car to accept that version. They are bit better to handle that type of driving from what I understand.
And RMP motors recommended 5w40 for oil to help limit valve tick which also increases with short trips

Well... I did not want to replace the battery if I was not 100% sure about the issue. I've been driving my car around 60kms per day for the last month and the problem is gone .

Just go to a friends or family members house for a day and hook up to charger.....short trips don't charge battery enough.

I replaced my battery 2 years ago... and am starting to have issues myself, starting the car if it sits for 3+ days (never been an issue before, even after sitting for 2 weeks when on vacation).

Best way to diagnose/troubleshoot? I have a multimeter handy.

Also, I have a dashcam with a powermagic, but even when it's disconnected I'll still have a similar issue (though I wonder if the powermagic isn't turning off the camera when voltage drops - anyway to test that?)

Did u not buy a AGM battery ? Warranty ? I did read a similar case , the person went to the dealership and the battery was replaced no questions asked.
