Tyre size?
Hi folks,
Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I'm new to the BMW world. I've read with interest the difference winter tyres will make & I'm convinced. My car is an E90 M Sport with 225/45/17 and 255/40/17 but I've been offered a set of 16" alloys which are too good to refuse at only £100. Can someone confirm the tyre size I should be looking at for Winter tyres? Can I get away with cheap winter tyres or should I be looking at the bigger tyre names such as Michelin / Conti / Bridgestone? My commute is less than 8 miles. Thanks Duncan |

Are you sure you can get 16" rims on the wheel hub without hitting the brake callipers, is there enough clearance?

Depends on engine, if its a 6 cyl 16's are no good. I run Goodyears on 18's and Michelin's on 16's and they are worth every penny in the bad weather.

Depends on the wheel specs as to what tyres to put on, but 195/55/16 would probably be about right.
Assuming they are for your 318d then 16's should fit fine. If you can though, try fitting one to the front before purchase just to be sure they will clear. Nokian make a VERY good winter tyre : http://lovetyres.com/tyre/Nokian-WR-D3/195-55-16 Or you can stick to the bigger players as mentioned above. |

The wheels are from an E46. According to http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/ they are "Styling 136" and are 7x16 with et47. I've already bought them and they have 225/50x16 tyres on. I haven't tried them on the car nor bought winter tyres yet.
When I say 'cheap' tyres, I don't mean £20 for the man down the pub but equally I don't want to fork out £180 for a tyre when a tyre priced at £80 will be nearly as good for the short distances I drive. I spotted some Kumho KW23 205/55 R16 from mytyres on ebay which were a possibility. I used a tyre comparison guide and that size of tyre will only be 2mm less diameter than my existing 225/47x17 & 255/40x17 setup. Duncan |

For UK conditions I would go with the standard non-staggered summer tyre width for your car. I would also pick winters that test well in dry and wet conditions(99% of your UK driving will not be on snow/ice) and not budgets - people (mainly of the lead footed variety) can struggle with the transition to premium winters let alone cheap ones.
That said there are people like Vredestein and Nokian who do great winter tyres at a price between a ditch finder special and Michelin, who tend to be the most pricey... I have had good experiences with Nokian WRG2 and the newer WRA3 and they suit the range of conditions needed for UK use.... |

Headieboy71, as you're in Edinburgh, NewLifeTyres did me a good price on Hankook W310s, size 205/55/16 all round. They've done me well over the last 3 winters. I paid a bit more for XL load (94) and V rating over the 91H, but the latter may be fine too.
Your alloys have different offset mind, being an e46 design, so I'd second the advice above to check these do atually fit before buying tyres. FWIW I use a set of style 156, an e90 7x16 design, with 34mm offset. |

I just found a set of 156's with snow tyre on for £300! If I hadn't just had to fork out £500 for a cam chain the day before I go away I would have snapped them up.
If anyones in the Newcastle area, drop me a PM and ill send you the link. |
