328i sluggish acceleration off the line
(I've searched the forums and cannot find an answer; I am new here so please don't flame me.)
I just recently purchased a CPO 2007 BMW 328i from the local BMW dealer. I also purchased their 6 year/100,000 mile maintenance program. Love the car, but there's something about this car that bugs the heck out of me, and the dealer says it's normal. The issue is the sluggishness of the acceleration off the line. Under 3K rpm, off the line, the car is sluggish until it hits around 3K, and then it accelerates fine. But even then it surges out of the lull period. The service people at dealer say it's normal and it's just the car getting accustomed to my driving style; that it will adapt to my style in a few weeks. Hard to believe. Is that true? I read on the internet forums, and this problem seems to exist for a lot of BMW owners. It's a bit disappointing. Is there something else that can be done for this issue? Thanks. |

The car's transmission is notoriously sluggish off the line. It's normal. Try the DS mode for a quicker start. And your car will learn your driving habits if they reset the transmission.

But with a manual transmission the 328 is amazing...naturally aspirate and responsive, it does lack power...but it is a fine handling car. |

ps - love the 335 guys who always lurk just to write "a 335 is better" or "you wouldn't have that problem with a 335."
All of those things are true. We lowly 330/28/25/etc drivers get it. We also get that we wanted a reliable daily driver that wasn't at the dealer once a month. We're OK with have an 'inferior' car - I think it's time you guys became OK with your inferiority complexes.

If your 328i has the GM 6 speed AT, the sluggishness is normal. The next 3 Series will get the ZF 8 speed AT. It can't come soon enough.
Meanwhile, there is a way to wring some fun out of your 328i and that is to put the AT in DS mode. It will cost you 4 mpg, but it is a small price for maintaining one's sanity. The 328i is a different car in DS mode. Try it. Have fun! |

yea. DS mode really helps for getting off the line.. sometimes the in regular AT mode, it takes forever for it to switch from 1st to 2nd gear and i really have to rev it before it shifts gear. =.=

All 328 owners try to make themselves feel better by saying the 335 is unreliable. So far from the truth.

It's the Steptronic in the 328i (or all cars in general). Manual > auto in city driving when it comes to responsiveness. The 335i Steptronic has half an inch of dead travel as well when coming off the line but during spirited or DS driving, the lag goes away. I test-drove the 328i when shopping and felt the same sluggishness.
