There is no oil cooler T-stat. The oil cooler system has a bypass built in before the cooler that the ECU controls with a solenoid. It appears the ECU shoots for around 240 deg oil temps.

It definitely has a thermostat, I saw it when installing an oil cooler. Just dont know when it opens, I will say 230-240 thats where my car stays at.

Thats very interesting as I was reading a PDF that specifically stated the car did not use conventional thermostat and basically was bragging about using the computer controlled bypass setup that is diagrammed above. Not that surprising though, there's rampant misinformation about these cars floating about.

Here's a picture of the thermostat housing, BMW Part number 11-42-7-564-892.
Oil coolers DO come with thermostats. As to at what temperature does the oil cooler kick in? Sorry, don't know. hehe Last edited by thealbert; 08-09-2007 at 07:57 PM.. |

Normal operating temp seems to be 240 F, so I'd guess oil flows to the cooler when it gets a bit higher than that.

well given that most people have oil temps around 230-240 steady w/ cooler there are two options
1: thats where the oil cooler opens and is big enough to dissipate any heat buildup 2: it open prior to 240 but reaches a critical efficiency at 240 that cannot be overcome by heat generated by the engine #1 is much more likely and #2 is near impossible given that people in very different conditions experience the same temps |

It opens @ 180-200. You can open the hood and put your hand on the oil lines and they are hot before your gauge reads 200

Dinan came out and showed me their S3-M3, the driver told me while we were doing 120 on a 40 mph street that they have a larger oil cooler coming out soon for the 335i. Probably cost too much though.

before the oil cooler my car ran at 255-265, all the time.
after the cooler, it runs at 230-240 all the time. Based on how the car warms up to around 200 pretty quick, and then takes much much longer, sometimes never even reaching 220 in a 15 minute drive, I would have to say that the thermastat opens around 200 |

I agree its likely 190-200 degrees computer controlled if it is electronic. If it were a mechanical thermastat then it would have an opening range say from 185-200 degrees.

BMW oil coolers have always been thermostatically controlled. Since the e30 325i and e28 M5. Cooling the oil before its too hot is actually a bad thing. Oil works best at a certain temperature, so you want it to warm up as quickly as possible.
Just because the lines are hot doesnt mean the thermostat is open either. The engine compartment is a hot place, and the airflow through the radiator blasts the front of the engine with the heat taken from the coolant. Five minutes of running will heat it all up in there. If the cars with coolers dont get above 230 or 240, I'd say thats exactly where the thermostat is opening. Once its fully open, the oil isnt going to get any hotter. Its got more oil cooling capacity than the car needs. |
