Recommend a custom suit tailor in Boston, MA area

So, I am trying to find the best place to get a custom suit made in the surrounding boston area (I also live close to the NH border too). This is going to be my wedding suit so it has to be nice. I have visited/spoken to the following places but need more suggestions:

1. Eastern Clothing in Watertown (decent price and specializes in athletic fit)
2. Giorgio Armani in Newbury St (a little too expensive for me but not shutting the door on it because it fit like a glove (wool/silk ftw))
3. Brooks Brothers in Newbury St (not sure how I feel about them)
4. Bristol Clothing (spoke with Buzz on the phone but waiting on quote)

Does anyone else have any recommendations? I would prefer if you actually had a custom suit made from the place you recommend so that I know for a fact they are good. I am looking for a slim fit (like how the Giorgio Armani suits fit). Thanks guys!

WIL

Hey guys,

I run a custom-tailoring suit business. Our suits are tailored to the customers exact needs and fit in our Hong Kong workshop by tailors trained in Italy. We offer high quality fabrics that are imported from Europe and that are at par if not better than Armani, Boss, etc. I have hundreds of samples available for you to choose from to help you find your exact match.

Please PM me for further info or questions, I'd be glad to help a fellow E90 member.

P.S. - Congratulations Wil!

Check out Tom James. They will come to you and take your measurements and go through their styles and options. They also have package deals with custom shirts as well. Good luck. Www.tomjames.com

Wil,

congrats man!

I would go with the Armani since you know it already fits. What are you wearing with it? I love my Thomas Pink shirts man, highly recommend them. Really slim cut fit, perfect lengths for me at least

they have a store in the Natick Collection

Have you gotten a custom suit from them before?

The price is holding me back. Having trouble justifying so much money for the name, but it does fit well...I just think I can save money getting a custom suit created.

Andover Shop is a good suggestion (nothing against Press, just don't have experience). They definitely have a more conservative, preppy style, very different from Armani. Another option in Harvard Square is Rizzo's on Church Street. I've had him do some tailoring for me before on stuff that I bought off the rack, and his work is top notch. He is a little difficult to deal with (you need to be emphatic about how you want something to fit because he can be pretty insistent about what he thinks the right fit is, and trends toward a more European style, he also wouldn't work on a suit I brought to him that had been poorly tailored at Saks because he said he wouldn't clean up another tailor's mess, which pissed me off). He claims that John Kerry, the late Sen. Kennedy, and other local big wigs have had their suits made by him.

I've always had great luck buying suits off the rack at a high end department store, and then bringing them to a good tailor to be fitted (which is what I did for my wedding suit). It's usually cheaper than having a bespoke suit made and if you find a brand that fits you well I would be surprised if you could tell the difference between that and bespoke. If you go that route, do not have the dept. store tailors make the alterations, and leave the tags on because the tailor you bring it to may have some input on fit and you may want to change sizes or brands.

One final thought, I often look for Loro Piana fabric when I'm buying suits, sport coats or slacks. Many brand names use their fabric, and I've found that it looks great and holds up really well over time.

Good luck.

Great info! I definitely want the Armani look so I am pretty dead set on that and also not going to pay an arm and a leg for a suit which is why I'm backing away from the suit I tried on at Armani. With that said though...I do not want it to look like a business suit...it has to have a little old school batman KAPOW! to it.

btw. when you said that "they" have a more conservative and preppy look...are you talking about Press or the Andover Shop?

I've had custom suits made but funny enough, my favorite suit is Hugo Boss which I picked up at Nordstrom. I'm a fairly slim guy, this just seemed to fit with slight adjustments and total was less than $1g.

I just tried on a Hugo boss this past weekend and it fit perfectly but it did not have the right color...may go back to pick it up as a business suit though. Where is a good Hugo boss store? The one on Huntington did not have a goods
Selection.

The store did seem alot smaller than others I've been to. Did they close the one in the Natick Collection? Other than that can also try Bloomingdale's

I wouldn’t sell Brooks Brothers short. Yes, their 346 (outlet store) line of clothing is crap and they also sell some lower quality lines made in Malaysia in their retail stores too, but their classic “Golden Fleece” suit and “Luxury” shirt lines are finely tailored in Massachusetts from top quality American and Italian made fabrics.

I just got a flyer in the mail advertising BBs “Made to Measure” event that’s running through April 21, 2012 at their “special order” stores. It’s 20% off custom made suits and 25% off custom made shirts. You pick the fabric(s) and style(s). I’m getting a suit made at the main BB store at 356 Madison Avenue in NYC later this month. I know they have similar stores in the Boston area. I've been very satisfied with the quality, tailoring, fit and styles of BBs Golden Fleece and Luxury shirt lines.

There's a Hugo Boss store in Natick, that's where I got my suit from last year.
