My MTEC fogs were meant to match the stock headlights, so I am not sure there would be a good color match now. Maybe I should consider Mike's 8500k HID fog light upgrade?

i would, at start up it has this blue/purple (which only last for couple of seconds), then it moves to white, with maybe a slight hint of blue in it....
actually the video you posted is almost identical to what i see on my garage wall when i start the car up

I'm a former moderator of HIDplanet.com, an automotive lighting website. I now own an '07 328xi. I hope this post is helpful and informative and not too inflammatory; because I have some strong opinions, but they're all pretty well founded in years of experience with lighting. Enjoy! 4300k from the dealer, is the best. It's the brightest lumen output with consideration of safety (less blue content). If you're concerned about legality, only 4300k bulbs are legal in the USA. IF they don't say DOT approved, they're illegal. And coming from NYC, I'm constantly pissed off at the glaring blue lights that people stick in their cars; it's rude and obnoxious. The glare is terrible. We have a nice car, why do you need to make it seem like a cheap car?!? Because I've had a cheap car, with blue headlights, and they suck; I know a lot of people start out with blue, but once you realize the more blue you have the worse optical performance you have, I hope you'll see things the same way. Technical: What people fail to take into consideration is that CCT (Color Correlated Temperature) is a relative scale based on black body objects (stars/suns), their radiation patterns are a relatively even output of colors. (see pics below). When we talk about any non-incandescent bulb (fluorescent, hid, xenon etc...) you have peaky output, it's not linear output from 400nm to 800nm (blue to red), so any discussion of color temperature is almost wholly based on the manufacturer's reputation (because they can fudge the numbers easily). There is also a second spec that is rarely discussed called CRI (Color Rendering Index) which is supposed to say how accurately a lighting source resembles a black body object (sun/star which has linear output in all colors). The problem is that it's expensive to test CRI, and nobody does it. If they did, it would test particular colors at 8 points and see how accurately they depict the relative colors at a rated Color Temperature... i.e. a sun would be 50 lumens brightness at 470nm (blue) at 4300k and this bulb puts out 40 lumens, therefore it's 80% CRI because it's only 80% accurate of a "real" sun/star (incandescent body etc...) See here the relative amounts of various colors in a color temperature. The more blue (higher Kelvin) the more blurry your vision becomes. Your eyes "think" blue is brighter because it has a higher "impact", but you are unable to focus on the bulb's blue part of the spectrum because the cones which focus on blue are outside your retina's focus point. Try staring at a blue LED in the dark, jab your head back and forth and see what I mean. Here's our relative response (how we percieve color intensity) The blue startup is the mercury in the bulb igniting the other bulb's "metal halide" salts (a combination of various elements are called a "salt" no matter if it's NaCl or not). Every company has their own "blend" and the quality of the salts is what determines color temperature, CRI, bulb life etc... |

Tried to contact Mike and go to his website but was unsuccessful. I'm interested in the 6700k. Would the D1S fit the 2011 E92?
p.s. sorry for the hijack. -Jose |

I also tried to order from Mike's website today. Tried several months ago. Both with same result:
Seller Account 344224142721845 is not active. His site's Blog and News links are dead. Does anyone know if he is still in business or heard anything from him since last fall? |

You guys should try E92-Lighting.com
Derrick is a vendor on here..I recently purchased these same bulbs (8500k) and couldnt be happier. They are hands down the most beautiful HIDs i've ever owned. I can't think of anyone else who carries philips bulbs. Last edited by E92White; 04-07-2011 at 01:59 AM.. |

They're just so beautiful..I always look forward to seeing them at night. Its funny how they're rated at 8500k.They're nothing like your typical 8000k bulb. Everyone frowns upon 8000k bulbs since they have a reputation to look very aqua/ricer and usually lose alot of light output. These bulbs are nothing like this.Infact,i'm convinced these arent true 8500k bulbs.I believe they're in the 6000k range, but are sold and label as 8500k since it sounds 'exotic' and rare. The fact that they're Icy white, with hints of blue/purple,makes me believe this.IMHO,the 8500k are really the 6700k,the 6700k are really 6000k,and the 6000k are around 5700k,and so on. |

Yep..they're awesome ! I get a hard-on everytime I see them.. I'm really glad I got these..I was torn between the 6700k and these, but these were everything I hoped for.Light output doesnt suffer either,I was very surprised. They remind me alot of the color you see on acura's,which I know is mainly the projector making those colors, but these bulbs look pretty damn close. I love them. |
