brake disc skimming?
has anyone had their disc's skimmed?
I am being quoted £120 inc vat to have my front two done in this case its not better off for me to buy new ones as I have pretty expensive discs on the front and they told me I can get another 10k out of them. I am just wondering what the drive is like after skimming? thanks |

Personally I'd just get new ones but that's just me.
Never had any skimmed, but when I've warped them before I just replace them.

I've had mine done previously at BJ Motors over Smethwick way.
That was because it was my Brembo BBK discs so quite expensive. Of course it can be better to have them skimmed if you keep warping discs as this could mean runout on the hub as opposed to the disc. If this is the case then they lathe them on the car/hub so run them true to the hub which means shouldn't have an issue going forward.

There can't be that much of a difference in price surely?
The way I look at it is if you've got a car where the disks are that expensive that you have to consider whether or not you can afford to replace them, you're potentially driving a car you can't afford to run. I personally wouldn't skimp on anything brake related, I'd only replace a disk for a new one. |

Time to get out the calculator and work out what's the best value for money. After 10,000 you are back to needing new discs and the £120 is gone.

I had my last front discs skimmed, they did them on the car with a specialist machine it took about 1 1/2 hours & cost £80, once I'd bedded them back in they were fine for 7k or so then the vibration under braking was back.
Personally I wouldn't go down that road again. If your looking for a inexpensive fix & your not keeping the car long term then worth considering |

Not being funny towards those who've replied above but having the discs skimmed doesn't mean you can't afford to run your car. His discs have a lot of life left in them so it's just economically more viable to get them skimmed on this occasion.
I've had my discs skimmed previously and that was on my £3k BBKs. I had them done because they shouldn't have warped and I actually found there was runout on the hubs themselves so it made sense to have the discs skimmed to run straight to the hub.

I'm sorry Raj, I disagree. It's not economicaly viable to pay £120 for disks to be skimmed vs paying £150, maybe less for new discs which could last anywhere upto 50k dependent upon driving style.

Got mine done on an old car for £15 a disc. Unfortunately a lot of these small businesses don't exist anymore.
I wouldn't skim disk's now though. For the sake of the cost of new. not worth it. |

Also he never stated his discs are £150, that's an assumption someone else made. I only said it was economically viable as that is what the OP said in his post. He hasn't given the full details. He could be running £6k BBKs for all we know. He may be selling the car hence wants to keep costs down, or doesn't drive more than 3k a year (hence only going by the OP's comments initially). My point also was more towards knowing why discs have warped. I had an example where I could chuck as many pairs of discs I like at my previous car but the issue was with the hub. Unless you know it's simply a matter of warping just the disc then yes you could say paying the extra is a better option (again only if you are keeping the car).

my disc size is 370mm I think (not bmw) and the discs are apparently quite expensive as they are radial grooved and drilled if that's right.
I think £120 is a lot of money to have them skimmed but I don't know anywhere else who could do them and this place has good recommendations |

I can find the receipt for the guys that did mine if you want, they were at Bromley but the machine they used to do them on the car to compensate for run out is at other franchised garages, there was a list of locations nationwide

I am just thinking that I don't want to pay to get them done and they are not good after as I get judder at steering wheel at high speed when I brake |

Mine were resolved after having them done and it's a very minor amount that is skimmed off. However every situation is different and my discs weren't terribly old and they were stupidly expensive. The car will drive fine afterwards though.

the few times in the past ive had disks skimmed it ended badly. Ok, you have worn disks and therefore less meat to absorb and release heat from the effect of braking so they warp. You then remove more meat from the disk and you have no brake judder, but you have even less meat than earlier so your disks warp AGAIN.
Throw them in the bin Often after market disks can be had for similar to OEM prices, I recently bought some Brembo disks for my honda fireblade, not the normal disks but the fully floating SBK race disks and now my brakes are much better than std. I could have bought cheapo 3rd party disks for the bike but I quite like the idea of having confidence that I can stop when i need to. |
