I would say anything that is older than an 11 plate car has a greater risk of developing issues. Although I've seen stories of 11 plate cars having issues too.

According to the PUMA report N47 engines built after March 2011 have all the revised parts and have less chance of failing. I had a 320d for just over 2 years, ran up to 60k and didn't miss a single beat! Sold it last week. Mine was built April 2011.

Ive done some proper research on this earlier this year as I thought that my car developed the issue:
-Anything after 05/09 has the revised parts -They've changed the name of the engine to N47C (previously B) -The report mentions that the updated engines still have chain noise but it's safe (apparently) -Regular oil services are recommend for the N47 (so don't listen to the car's computer) Hope that helped |

Hi
As you have mentioned you did research, does that mean 320d or 318d i should not buy it. As my budget is around £5k Max in that i can only get 05 or 06 plate cars which for sure will have N47 engine. Shall i completely drop the idea to be in the safe side and get 320i Touring. |

That's going from bad to worse^
The 2.0 petrol engine has major issues well documented on here. The most reliable of the engine range is the m57 3.0 diesel. If it was me try and get another 2k together then the choice will improve massively. |

I wouldn't rule out an early 320d, it may have had the Quality Enhancement that was recently advertised.
This is the translation from the BMW PUMA case for N47 timing chain issues... Attention: No repairs are allowed in vehicles with production date after 03/2011 and vehicles in which all existing measures have already been made. The sound now is the moment, the normal state of this world! No risk of broken chain! |

The engines possibly had crankshaft issues if built before 2009. After 2011 the chain guides and tensioners were updated. Actually if the car you're wanting to buy has had the remedial work carried out by bmw then I wouldn't have a problem buying a car for that reason. |

2005/2006 320d cars will have the m47 engine anyway.
You can't write off an entire engine model because of a few posts. You'll always hear horror stories on the Internet but not the thousands of people who haven't had a problem. The 2.0 diesel engines are bmws most popular engine after all! |

I had the late 2011 engine and at 35500 miles it had a rattle, especially on hard acceleration, which was enough for me to trade it in, it might not have been the timing chain but I didn't have a warranty and wasn't in a position to pay mega bucks.
As said in previous posts, the 320d, if running fine, performs really well, especially the 184bhp engine, low down torque is great! |

My 320d is on 158,000 miles currently and had chain related warranty work carried out at 108,000 miles. Since then it's run like clockwork.
Main thing is to check history. You can always give the reg plate to bmw and ask what work has been done on it (if done within the BMW network) |

Not considered a 325D/330D?
I had a late 2009 N47'd 320D a couple of years ago, great car but I was just always paranoid. I've now got a 2007 325D and it's a complete different ball game, 6 cylinder makes the world of difference and it still returns very similar (awesome) mpg on a run! |

My average is 46.7 with mixed driving but I do make the absolute most of the noise, never try to get good mpg from it. When I drive up to Sheffield and reset it, the average is over 50mpg easily using cruise.
I've never looked back, just under 500 miles to a tank is great for a 200+ bhp 3.0 6 cylinder. |

have you considered buying a car with a warranty? My 57 plate e92 (320d) had its timing chain replaced at 60k under warranty, its now on 90k and despite a plethora of other parts replaced under warranty the timing chain hasn't been an issue since.
A recent worrying noise on tick over which turned out not to be the timing chain but bearing on the water pump, the pump was replaced under warranty

How come I can buy a 1.6 turbo diesel Vauxhall Astra for £16k and have no issues what so ever. Yet buying and owning a bmw is like navigating a mine field of flawed, obviously flawed and leave you constantly paying out of you're arse for repairs flawed???
