CF fabric ashtray lid

I have read many of you having difficulty on using the CF fabric wrapping the ashtray. Here is a little DIY hope that help.

1. Here is how the base ashtray unit look like after you seperated the top lid. There are 5 tabs which are holding the top lid.

2. Here is how the back side of the ashtray lid will look like after you sepearated. You can see there are 5 clips. And yes, I broke the far left one on my first attemp when I swap the Sunglass tray. In this picture, you will also see the 3 melted spots that holding the chrome plastic part. Use some sharp object cutter or siccors and trim off the edges of the melted spots. Then push the pins and the chrome parts should be easily come off.

3. Spray the adhesive on the whole cover and put on the pre-cutted CF fabric. Work on all the corners and make sure all corner doesn't overlap. The fabric it stregthable, so you can avoid overlap by pushing and pulling. Once you get all corner smooth out, you can use your finger nail or some object that not so shap to find the line between the lip and black plastic bottom. Put little pressure so it showed the line. Now use a sharp cutter cut on the line and tear off the bottom fabric. Then use some alcohol to clean the residure on the black plastic part. Poke three holes on the fabric where the original chrome part seat.

hey soni, quick Q for you. The added thickness in the sunglass door, as well as having additional CF trim around the opening adds at least 1/2'' of extra material, how did you compensate for that? I appreciate your DIY and will do this myself, but the main question is all the added wrap WILL effect the opening/closing of this piece. How did you accomodate this? I was thinking of grinding down the sunglass door a couple inches all around then wrapping it as you suggested.

My problem in addition to teh sunglass door was having the smaller gap created between the sunglass door and the opening from the excess cf wrap...

Somehow I can't edit my 1st post. Pictures order is off!!

here we go again!! Also added few more pics!!

In this picture, you will also see the 3 melted spots that holding the chrome plastic part. Use some sharp object cutter or siccors and trim off the edges of the melted spots. Then gentlely push the pins and the chrome parts should be easily come off. DO NOT PUSH TOO HARD, you might bend or break the piece.

3. Spray the adhesive on the whole cover and put on the pre-cutted CF fabric. Work on all the corners and make sure all corner doesn't overlap. Now use a sharp cutter cut on the line and tear off the bottom fabric. Then use some alcohol to clean the residure on the black plastic part. Poke three holes on the fabric where the original chrome part seat. Put back the chrome part, you can use some glue to glue down the chrome pices, but the pins should be tight enough that you don't really need to use any glue.

Nice DIY write up, but the problem is that the added vinyl material does NOT let the Ash tray door open and close correctly.

You have to ensure that the alignment is correct with the ash tray assembly with respect to the center console. I had a rubbing issue at first with my vinyl cf trim the 2nd time i redid it. Now it opens/closes flawlessly.

Thanks again Soni

I have no problem at all. Maybe you are using a thicker material and I am using thinner material.

Also, I don't like the modify idea in case if you want to go back to stock, will it affect the OEM look or function

Here are 2 clips of my front and rear ashtray cover open and close movement. As you can see it open and clow without a problem.

just do 2 pieces per day...at the end you see all trims will be ver nice. But if you try to do it all at once, spend like 5-8 hours...man, the last few pieces are going to be sloppy!!

is there anything that you can put over the finished product like a clear coat or something?
or does the glue dry and act as a clear coat?

you don't really need any clear coat...the fabric itself easy to clean with any cleaning product and fabric itself is water resistant.
