Great photos, well done. One suggestion, prime the filter before installing.

Pour a thin stream of new oil over the outside of the filter all the way around. [also, after the filter and drain plug is in place, pour the 1st qt of oil into the center of the filter (and on into the engine and sump), before putting the filter cover on. This fills the bottom part of the filter housing with oil, and soaks the bottom part of the filter.] This helps prevent that moment of oil starvation while a new filter is filled with oil.

Great, thanks! I will try this next time I change oil (should be next week).

Nice post! When under warranty (when the stealership would be picking up the tab), they told me the oil didn't need to be changed until 20,000 miles. I trust them as far as I can throw them.

I change the oil myself every year or 3000 miles, whichever comes first. My 2006 325i has 65,000 miles and runs perfect.

Nice post!

If anyone uses Rhino ramps, do you also jack up the back so that the car is about even??? A youtuber mentioned to try to level the car when draining oil.

I did an oil change on ramps a few weeks ago. I'm pretty sure the additional oil that came out when I jacked up the rear was negligible, and really it didn't start draining again until I put the rear back on the ground. It certainly won't hurt to do it but I would feel fine about just putting the front on the ramps and skipping the rear next time if I had to.

This thread is so long that I may have missed it when someone mentioned a Mityvac. I have used one exclusively for several years and it makes oil changes a snap. Insert the tube in the dipstick hole (another reason not to drive an F car) pump it up and proceed to remove the filter housing and replace the filter.
You may have to pump it up one or two more times. When it looks like it is almost done, jiggle the tube in the dipstick tube and pump a few more times till you cannot pull any more out.
Replace dipstick, fill with oil check level, move the directional vale on the Mityvac to discharge and fill your waste oil container for disposal at any autoparts store.
Total time about 15 minutes. No ramps, no jacks, no hassle.

If you worry that it doesn't extract enough oil, I can tell you, I drained my e46 with it and then replaced the oil level sensor which sits in the lowest part of the crankcase. It expected a bit of oil to be left but only 2 drops came out when I removed the sensor.
I actually changed my oil in a white shirt and tie to show my buddy how clean it was. I did use a pair of nitrile gloves.

Oil leak from oil filter seal after oil change

This was my second time to change my 09 335 engine oil. Oil and filter are both from BMW dealer and I changed 6.5 qt of 5W30 from the dealer. The filter was hand tied.( 1 / 5 turn after the marker). Level showed in between min/max.

I drove about 1 hour without problem until I put it to DS mode. I noticed the smoke was coming out from the hood. The oil was coming out from the oil filter gasket. Not a little, it is all over the engine compartment.

I didn't know how much oil it was lost. I washed the engine with engine degrease and checked the filter. I noticed the gasket rubber ring was pushed out a little bit and that was where the leak coming from. Opened the filter and re-installed the filter carefully and Oil was still coming out after 30 min driving. I even changed a new filter and gasket without success.

Dashboard always shows I need +1 qt. oil from lower side. I added 2 qts and it is still showing +1 qt.

Did I miss something? Before sending my car to the dealer, I'd like to hear from you guys. How do I know if electronic oil level sense is bad?

BTW, can I use Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic from Costco? I got mixed information from this forum.

Thank you in advance.

Which motor oil should I buy

Hey guys,
Has anyone used Castrol EDGE 0W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil on E92 N51? I found it on amazon and it shows that it is LL-01 ?
I cant find Castrol 0W-30 or Mobil 1 0W-40 anywhere in local stores.

It turns out because of the oil filter gasket was placed to the wrong position. It should not be to the end of the cap. Costly mistake!

Garage List
You can see the correct position of the large o-ring here. It sits in a groove away from the cap flange:

Hi - I'm a 1st time BMW owner. Picked up a E93, 3 weeks ago and started reading the forums that same night. Bought the filter removal tool, the approved oil and filter. Everything was exactly as the original post stated. Since the oil change was so easy, I even went the extra mile and removed the carbon filter from the air box, sanding down the edges and washing and drying the air box before reinstalling it.
Thanks to everyone for their input.

Let's bring this long thread into 2020! Here's my version of the oil change DIY in 4K.

Also did a Liqui Moly engine flush and tried out their lifter additive with the Molygen oil.

You actually shouldn't add the additive if you're using the Molygen

This propelled equation implies that the added substance parts are splendidly adjusted inside the oil. Along these lines, best motor oil you get the opportunity to appreciate all the extra advantages of the added substances, for example, the oil going on for a more drawn out timeframe, without stressing over any of the drawbacks.
