its a free options here, thats why i choose non smokers, then i called up my dealer my sales rep. told me it smokers but i argued that i specifically ordered non smokers, hes telling me well just see as soon as the car arrives, hes telling me that there is enough storage space for my sunglass and everything aside from the front tray, the we cannot change the package anymore. do you think its still my right to insist?

DIY - Sunglass Holder
I know that this is an old post. By i am in Europe, and the dealer wants to charge me 52 Euro (65 American) to install this part. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most difficult, how would you rate this task? How long did it take?

Following the DIY, I would say this task is a 2 (10 being something like changing the engine)
The hardest part is getting the trim off, which just requires some brut force. I would definately tackle this yourself. Take the excellent DIY with you into the car, buy the torx t-20 screw driver and have a go at it. |

I would say a 4 because I'm a pussy and was afraid I would break my trim. But in reality its probably about 2 or 3...

Some clarifications
I just completed the DIY. I must admit getting the trim off is extremely difficult. It too me over 2 hours and I consider myself an above average mechanic.
The trim cover is held in place by 5 tabs. Please realize that the aluminum/wood trim is glued to the black plastic peice below (this peice has the tabs). Do not try and pry on the thin cover. Also I had to break all 5 tabs before the cover would come off. Then I re-glued the aluminum cover back onto the sunglass holder. I read other posters say this job takes 3 minutes. It would be impossible to do a clean job and complete this DIY in 3 minutes. It is not impossible to install the sunglasses holder, but I suggest some patience on getting the darn trim cover off! |

That would depend on how long it takes theem to install it. Most dealerships charge by the hour. So you should expect that they will round up to the nearest hour. My SA was not even aware of this option, and he is 99 percent of the time on top of things.

I have a E92 on order and noticed that it has a rear compartment (that mimics the ashtray) in the back seat. Does this contain a sunglass holder or a second ashtray? if it does contain a sunglass holder, what are the odds I just switch the two?

Let me re-enphasize the importance of the picture below.
I even added an arrow to show the second location where you need to insert a flat head screw driver to remove the cover from the unit. Removing the cover IS easy if you know what to do. I started trying to remove it from the front and later realized that was not how to do it.

Here is the new and enhanced sunglass tray.
No more excuses that you can't find your sunglasses in the dark.

I have just done this modification this afternoon, I cant beleive how easy it actually was,
Start to finish in approx 20 mins for the whole thing completed. The trim removal was a real easy job. All i did was grab and hold the trim at the leather part of the gear stick, And pull straight up to the roof. In seconds it is clean off with NO damage. Then quickly removing the 4 hex screws, strip out the ashtray, Remove my aluminum cover as per the above picture and re-assemble.. Its real easy and cost me just over £13.00. I am going to to remove the rear one next, and add the power outles. Keep up the good work guys, These mod tutorials are really excellent.. Thanks |

Hi, this looks like a good idea, but i have 3 questions:
1) will this part fit in a e92? 2) will doing the install yourself void your factory warrarnty? 3) do you have to remove the iDrive knob first? |

No you do not need to remove the idrive knob. when you remove the trim, you do not need to disconnect the wires to the Idrive either.
