At the airbox, I have a 3in OD fitting (a lot like yours), then a 3in ID rubber coupler, then a 3in OD flexible hose to run to the filter. I'm having trouble making the right turn out of the airbox with my setup: the coupler goes too far toward the strut tower before my hose can start turning. If I can drop the coupler, I think I'd be golden. Means I need a 3in ID flexible hose.

That's it.
It's the super abrasion resitant one. The rubber/poly mix is very strong and smoothe.

Just a thought if you wanted to try it....I used to do a lot of motor work on my Supercharged Jetski's (intake, exhaust, larger injectors, rrfpr, bigger supercharger, prop, etc) and Kanaflex tubing was extremely popular in the community for custom intakes. The tubing is strong, flexible, durable, and best of all you can get it in a smooth bore inside the tubing maximizing flow. If it can hold up in the engine bay of a jetski, I have no doubt it will hold up in the car. There are many different sizes and options, so if you are interested PM me and I'll try and find exactly what I used before. I'm not sure its worth it for you to change it out, but just thought I would provide the information none the less.

I agree its all I need, but its also not what I want. No thanks. My car got more than enough power now, and not planning on going the meth route. Don't want to deal with all the headaches and what ifs; no time for that honestly. I am a set forget get in and drive kind of dude. Did I mention how absolutely beautiful that Dinan CAI is?

I know, I know, $1000, I paid for the CAI after long research and it didn't bother me one bit. Just like those designer clothes don't bother the wearer. Different people want different things, and NO WAY I was going to throw DCIs in my engine bay. Just me. But remember there are people who think you are fool paying top $$$ for a BMW too.

I appreciate it but what I have now is pretty darn smoothe on the inside and it's working really well.

From looking at the list, models 110 CL, 180 AR, and possibly 200 SFG. All those should be rugged enough to hold up, while still be flexible enough to bend to where you need it.

Well, since we've resurrected this thread, I'm reminded that most of us typically don't drive 60-100 on a daily basis.

I sort of like Cobb's terminology for DCI = HCI (hot air intake) and the warning that HCI's tend to lower detonation thresholds.

Mr. 5's system is definitely the way to go if anyone is considering safety along with performance.

I still think that the hose I used is ideal (post 46).
It's super flexible (and it needs to be) and is made out of excellent abrasion resistant thick polyurethane/rubber material.
On top of everything, it's very inexpensive.

Thanks for the help Craig. I sourced that same hose, relocated my PS fluid reservoir for a very clean install...

Most people, even my (admittedly non-car-geek) friends with N54s , can't figure out what's non-OEM under my hood.

The PS fluid reservoir relocation was a fun bit.

1) un-mount the PS fluid reservoir
2) remove the big steel bracket that bolts to the front frame
3) remove the mounting bracket from the reservoir
4) replace the mounting bracket upside down on the reservoir, above the lip to better clear the hood (I also put a little high-temp double-sided tape inside the bracket's ring to keep the reservoir from slipping out of the bracket)
5) fabricate a small, stainless, 45-degree angled bracket to mount the reservoir bracket to on the little nub behind the headlights
6) remount the reservoir to the nub+stainless bracket

With the above steps, there's a ton of room for the 3" ID hose to my cone filter in the fender.

I installed my "Mr. 5 Intake" last week. I took the factory reservoir bracket and cut off that useless box hanging down. Then I ground down the welds, primed and painted the whole bracket. With the reservoir offset on one stud the hose fits under the bracket. I will have to post a picture.

Your setup looks like it has a better chance of fitting with the new Vishnu meth kit. Any better pictures of your angle bracket and how you installed?

Not sure about Mr. 5 but I used the same one on the Vishnu DCI:
S&B model R0738 ($32)

Ideally you need a 3" ID flange. My filter OD is 5.25" and its a tight fit.

I bought a Spectre flange from Advance. I trimmed two of the edges, drilled new bolt holes and painted it black. It sits flush with the side of the airbox and a gasket. (I cut and trimmed all of the vanes off in that area on the side of the airbox.)

I have other pictures, but they're trivially more illustrative. See below. First pic shows better the mounting location. The second pic is a view of my hacky bracket.
