Unhappy Engine Fault - Reduced Power 335i / other problems

Problem ONE
Finally been getting this message a few times in the past month
Happens randomly, cruising, accelerating, first lap on Nurburgring - ruined my first experience and €25 / lap!!

Anyway decided to get it checked out, main dealer wanted £99! Rang wheelbasebmw.co.uk and it's £25 for a auto logic check?

Intermittent, not constant on the light / message.

Is that alright, price and route to go through?

Problem TWO
Other problems / questions. Should I get my oil+filter changed once a year?

Problem THREE
Another warning light that left rear fog light is out and message went again. Car playing up? Didn't know there was 2 rear fog lights?

Problem FOUR
Still bugging me about the inner rear and outter front tyre wear. Should I get tracking done?

what are the symptoms? Low boost mode could be triggered by a whole number of things.

You should consider buying a code reader like BT cable or as incorporated in JB4/Cobb/Procede etc. Saves you in the long run...

Just the warning message, and then low power under acceleration. Car still runs and runs. If I turn off car, rest a little, then message goes away. Happened about 4-5 times in the last 2 months. Now that I'm back in UK, I thought its time to sort out problem.

What's a BT cable? I really want to get in to this whole computer thing, don't know where to start. JB4, I know what that is though

Problem one

Well a little more detail would allow us to help you more but from what you have said this will only be a guessing game. What year is your car? is your engine N54? My car was 2008 /May N54 and i had those symptoms and had the injectors recall by the dealer and then all problem gone.

Other problem it could well be Vano's have a search on the forum about cleaning it as i sometimes getting engine light and my code reader diagnoise that.

Problem 2 How many miles are you running every year? Been discussed before and some like to change it early to have a good maintenance on the car yet some just leave it til it is due. I tend to leave it for on or before 10k then change rather than the 15k quoted when i see my MPG drop i change.

first step If you're running 19's RFT's 2.7 Bar on the front alloys and 2.9 on the rears you will get almost no inner wear. but outer wear is different. don't safe money and get it on a hunter alightment machine cost around 100 pounds but does improve the driving alot

when is your MOT time? be interested to hear if you can pass it without giving the guys alot of beer money i would get mine done too .that is the only thing holding me back now.

btw how is the coolcarbon pads?i think it was you who bought the set before right?

Passed last year.

Just the visual inspection to worry about. But the pipes are rusted now and not so bling anymore so hoping they'll go unnoticed...

About to get the brakes done - bought the wrong discs... See classifieds.

Answer One

It's a 2006 August model N54 335i. Thing is that's quite a old model so don't know if they would still do anything about the recall if its that. And that just plugging it in to their system will cost me £100 for diagnosis! So dare not take my car to the main dealer. Getting it checked out by specialist first.

Just under 10k for sure. But I drive quite hard at times. Just wondering how much it would cost roughly to get it done.

Also when do we know for sure the digital reading is correct. Goes mental from +1 litre, to 3/4 to full every now and then. Never know what to trust.

well you gotta pay to play.

About the recall it shouldn't cost anything hence it's called recall, call them and give them the reg and ask if your car is being recall for the injectors.

Going dealer for oil change around 180 all in or you can source your own oil and it should cost you 1 hour labour. if you want cheap go to national.co.uk and get a quote i paid 50 pounds for oil and filter change before.

I had similar to Problem ONE.

If was accelerating hard and there was a slight bump in the road that caused the car to "skip" over it slightly, i got the message. Sometimes i got the message just cruising at 60mph on the motorway. Happened about 4 or 5 times a month. Restarting the engine cleared it.

Dealer scanned it when car was in for service(for free - thank you warranty) and could find nothing, but as i was driving away from the dealer, by some miracle, it the engine fault light came on. So i made sure i didn't turn the engine off, turned around and drove back to the dealer and they scanned it whilst the engine was running and diagnosed the Cam Shaft Sensor.

Seems to have fixed it. Although the Engine fault light has come on once since then (about 6 months ago) but that was probably just a sensor anomaly.

I don't mind paying but £100 for a reading a code? Surely that's stealing.

Sounds cheap enough at national. Do they use good filters though?

Problem FOUR:

Yes, and don't get one of those el cheapo ones. They'll do more harm than good. Trust me. You should expect to pay about £70-100 for the proper 3D/Hunter alignment.

Find a local centre at http://www.alignmycar.co.uk or call a decent BMW specialist in the area who may have their own machine.

I had this done on my E46 330i and it involved clamping the steering wheel, and putting weights in the cabin and footwells to achieve the perfect result. If they aren't using the weights, they aren't doing it properly. Takes about 1-2 hours to do.

Kwik fit etc etc don't have these machines and "4 wheel alignment" is not the same thing so don't fall for it

Don't pay £100. It's ridiculous, i agree.

Find a local BMW Specialist who will charge £30 for using the exact same equipment. If i had paid BMW, they would have found no codes and i would still be £100 down.

RE: National - not sure, but buy a BMW branded one (only about £8 or something) and give it to them to use.

Hello people,

time for some update. Well I found a place in Cardiff which "looks" quite nice aatyres.co.uk. All the other ones look a bit dodgy around Bristol area. Anyway another matter to deal with in the near future.

Went to Wheelbase in Bristol to get it scanned, £20. Not paying Dick Lovett for £100 for a scan and went to Clayton in Bristol for battery coding last time. So trying different places while I'm at it.

So the results... (sorry for the ginormous images from my iPhone. Straight out the camera.)





so so, like I have experienced. Problem seem to be intermittent. Now hasn't showed up for a few weeks even under heavy driving. They said to leave it for now and it could just get worse progressively.

What to do what to do? Try and fix or get a quote etc?
Read up on many forums apparently it could be the VANOS o-ring, solenoid, sensor etc etc but people still having issues with it afterwards.

Forgot to ask about the thermal oil sensor though

Easy DIY.

You can clean the VANOS solenoids and see if this sorts the problem. They get clogged and stiff. 30mins maximum.

Replace the oil level sensor - don't wait for more problems.

I've done other car stuff before but never done any engine related stuff. Don't even know where to start or look?

And the oil sensor. Expensive and difficult to replace?
